The Exhausting Rules of Modern Dating and Texting
I recently watched a reel that perfectly captured what dating and communication often feel like today. In the video, a girl receives a text saying, "Hi." She sees it immediately but decides not to reply. Not because she’s busy, but because she worries that if she replies too quickly, the guy might think she has no life. After some time, she finally responds. He asks, "What are you doing?" She replies, "I’m reading." Then she pauses again and starts overthinking: Should I ask him what he’s doing? Her answer to herself is, No, that’s too much. Don’t seem too interested. And that’s when it hit me.
This is exactly what so many people experience today. Every text feels like a strategy. Every reply is carefully timed. People worry about replying too fast, replying too slow, double texting, showing too much interest, or appearing too available. What should be a simple conversation turns into a game of calculations and assumptions.
What I don’t understand is why everyone seems to be in a race to appear as if they don’t care. Being nonchalant has somehow become attractive, while genuine interest is often treated as a weakness. Ironically, we live in a time when communication is literally at our fingertips. We can reach anyone within seconds, yet meaningful communication feels harder than ever.
People want to appear busy even when they are not. They delay replies, hide their excitement, and pretend to be less interested than they actually are. Everyone is trying so hard to maintain an image that they forget the purpose of communication in the first place: connection. Relationships today often feel less like two people getting to know each other and more like a game where the person who cares the least is considered the winner.
The sad part is that all of this is emotionally exhausting. Instead of enjoying a genuine connection, people spend their energy following invisible rules created by social media and modern dating culture. Everyone wants to look unbothered, independent, and desirable, even when they genuinely want to talk to someone. Sometimes it feels like we’ve forgotten how simple human connection can be. Why can’t people just reply when they want to? Why can’t someone ask a question because they’re curious, not because they’re following a rulebook? Why does showing interest have to be seen as weakness?
Maybe that’s why so many people romanticize the past. Not because previous generations were perfect, but because relationships seemed more straightforward. There were no read receipts, no online status indicators, no pressure to calculate the perfect response time. People talked because they wanted to talk. They connected because they enjoyed each other’s company.
At the end of the day, the strongest relationships are not built on mind games. They’re built on honesty, effort, and the courage to be genuine. In trying so hard not look invested, many people end up pushing away the very thing they want most: a real connection. Sometimes a simple message, sent without overthinking, is worth more than all the rules in the world.
