Cuphead, the Review!
I knew I’d get to this point eventually!

Well, we come to a very monumental and very well anticipated part of this post. But first thing’s first, I beat Cuphead! I said I was going to beat that game and I did, I’m a fuckin’ game master! Today, I’m going to be reviewing the game from top to bottom.
Don’t get me wrong, I struggled. Cuphead is by no means an easy game on any difficulty. I even struggled with Ms. Chalice and a few of the guys on her list of baddies. But make no mistake, I would not be deterred.
I beat Cuphead in 5 days, but I guess when you’re as good as me, that sort of thing is expected. I got my ass whooped along the way so don’t think for a minute I’m going to say it was easy because it, in no way, was. Believe me, Cuphead made me work for it.
So, based on that, I’m going to be reviewing the game and what a game it was. The charms, the grade, the weapons, DLC and ultimately the bosses,I’m covering all of it.
With that said, let’s get started!
Bosses 10/10
These muthas, OMG, these guys put my ass through the wringer something awful. But the bosses in the game were as challenging as expected and again, they made me work for it and I definitely got a mental workout. It was good knowing that the bosses that you fought including the ones in the DLC were all debted to the Devil, which I knew already.
But, what I didn’t know was that the bosses were all residents of Inkwell Isle, so it was good knowing the bosses all lived in the respective places. The boss battles were fun and entertaining not to mention, hard but very doable!
Weapons 8/10
The weapons were not of a bad sort at all, I had my fair pick and thanks to some strategies on my part, I was able to acquire the Crackshot which was my go to from Inkwell Isle III to the DLC then to the endgame.
The only thing about the weapons that I didn’t like was that you didn’t get a first demonstration about the weapon, what it did before you bought it. But I can also see how that feature of the game cultivated mystique so you had to be smart about your coinage as it were.
But the weapons were fun to use, and you really felt like you were getting your money’s worth when they brought the bosses down, enemies too.
Charms 8/10
Most of the charms were ideally useless like the Heart Ring, but that’s not to say that most of them didn’t have their uses. My go to was the Twin Heart charm. Sure, it slightly weakened the attack power of my Crackshot, but the Crackshot’s already OP so a notch or two down from the max didn’t slow it down from killing the bosses in short order.
The Smoke Bomb, Twin Heart Charm, Coffee (good for airplane levels), Astral Cookie and the Whetstone were my ideal go to charms, they made the game bearable and to some small extent, a little easier. The only thing about the charms and buying them was that you had to buy up a good few of them to get to the good ones which sucked.
The Results 5/10
The end of stage results really enforced a standard of perfection within you, and it made you feel like you had to toe the line to get that A+++. But the main bonuses I was going for was the Parry, at first.
But I still felt like that the game was frowning on my lack of bonus gain when I got the results. I felt the results could’ve been a little more forgiving considering that most of us who play this game prefer to play it and through every stage once, only ONCE!
So the end of stage results were a little unfair, but it did sort of, in its own little twisted way, made you want to fight for better scores the next level over.
DLC 9/10
Okay, the DLC involving Ms. Chalice was a good side quest and a good distraction from Cuphead and Mugman’s path. Ms. Chalice played differently from the brothers, but her Invincible Dodge Roll and her Aerial Dash Parry made quick work of the King’s Leap challenges.
The Rook, Knight and Pawns were my toughest even with Ms. Chalice, but she did those alone because I knew she could handle it. Ultimately, Ms. Chalice made many of the fights easy especially the Howling Aces, Chef Saltbaker and Moonshine Mob including the King’s Leap challenges.
Overall, Ms. Chalice was fun to use, and her move set made life a little easier on the DLC. The only thing about the DLC I didn’t like was how it melded with the main game, it was its own dimension, sure, but the fact that it was something that couldn’t wait until after you beat the game was a little off-putting. But, I still had a lot of fun though so big plus!
Final Verdict, 9.8/10
Cuphead is one of the most challenging and frustrating games on the face of the earth or any other planet for that matter, but make no mistake, it is definitely a game that is not impossible to beat. The DLC with Ms. Chalice is a good switch up to the brothers and really give you a look inside her move set and abilities.
I would recommend this game to anyone looking for a challenge. Now, here’s some friendly advice from me. At times, this game will kick your ass and piss you off! But it is a good game that requires strategy and good hand eye coordination, if you have those then you’ll be set.
Don’t get upset and for god’s sake, don’t rage-quit. This game is just like any other, completely beatable, but it takes patience and timing. I beat this game in 5 days, it may take longer for some of you but my biggest thing is, I never gave up! So now I pass this advice to you, don’t give up!
