4 Copas Organic Tequila Blanco Review

I am really just hoping for a good tequila here. There seems to be a plague going around the tequila world of new really smooth tequila that doesn’t burn but is severely lacking in flavor. The last three brands I reviewed were all as smooth as water but tasted more like it than tequila. I’m just looking for a good product that actually tastes like agave, is that too much to ask?!

The first reason I am cautiously optimistic about 4 Copas is because of the bottle. It looks like it was made to sit on the back of a cantina rather than be passed around with a sparkler in the club.

The second is that it is produced in NOM 1457 which is the same distillery as El Reforma Tequila, which I am very familiar with and enjoy tremendously.

I am not going to comment on the organic part because although 4 Copas claims to be the original organic tequila, a quick google search will tell you that there are several other distilleries that also claim that. I am no way saying that they are right or wrong, I am just saying it is hard for us to know.

In the same way, many industries just slap on an organic label as a buzzword with little to no oversight. Again, I am not saying that 4 Copas is doing that. In fact I hope that they are not and if they truly are working in a sustainable way I applaud them for doing what they are doing and hope they continue. However, I am simply not going to comment because I don’t have enough information to corroborate or debate these statements.

On the nose, I’m a little disappointed. The agave is quite light and you get some grassy vegetal notes but not too much.

However as I take a sip, I learn my fears are unfounded. The agave, butterscotch and peppery notes abound and the earthy tones provide a fantastic backdrop for this blanco. There are also some nice citrus notes to the finish.

Smooth but flavorful? Someone pinch me I must be dreaming. It’s not the cheapest that you can get but it is worth it.
