Knowledge Is a Living Being

What if knowledge wasn’t just inert facts, but a living, breathing presence in our world? Imagine walking through life with knowledge as a companion, whispering advice and warnings. This metaphor may seem strange at first, but it draws on an ancient idea. In the very first chapters of the Bible, God places a tree of knowledge in the garden and warns Adam:

Genesis 2:16–17 And the LORD God commanded the man, “You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat from it you will certainly die.”

Here knowledge is directly linked to life and death and as a product of a tree. Adam himself “became a living being” when God breathed life into him (Genesis 2: 7) , and God set two trees at Eden’s center; one for life, one for knowledge (Genesis 2:9). These images suggest that knowledge and life are intertwined at the very root of our story.

I need to mention that I’m a Christian, and so I might be a bit biased by quoting from the Bible, but it’s not going to be the only source of reference.

Seeing knowledge as a living being makes me ask questions. Could knowledge have its own desires or will? In Eden, the fruit of knowledge promised wisdom but brought mortality. Knowledge (or wisdom) is compared to a “tree of life” that blesses those who hold it fast (Proverbs 3:18). In other words, true wisdom sustains and nourishes life, just like a tree. And the prophet Hosea warns that people “are destroyed for lack of knowledge”; implying knowledge is vital to our survival (Hosea 4:6).

Thinking of knowledge as something alive makes me wonder: Is knowledge a friend that guides us, or a stranger that tests us? Does it grow and change, or is it fixed? The story of Eden and other biblical images give us hints, but they leave much unsaid. In this series, I want to explore knowledge as something almost animate. An inner voice, a partner in our journey, and see what the word can teach us about knowledge. Are we masters of knowledge, or are we, in some way, led by it?

Consider this: every time you learn something new, does that knowledge simply sit on a shelf in your mind, or does it move with you and change the way you walk? The idea that knowledge lives in us, and perhaps around us, sets the stage for a curious, hopeful exploration. You’ve probably heard the saying “once bitten, twice shy”. In the coming chapters, I want to explore what it might mean if knowledge truly had life of its own, guiding our actions and shaping our dreams.

I can’t promise how long I’ll be exploring this, or how frequently I’ll be posting (I started a podcast that died), but I’m really excited to keep exploring.
