When You’re Running on Empty, Stay Connected to the True Source of Strength

When Rest Doesn’t Come

There are nights when sleep comes easily, and then there are nights when your mind simply refuses to settle down. Last night was one of those nights for me. After sleeping for a few hours, I woke up feeling a little warm, adjusted the air conditioner, and expected to drift back to sleep. Instead, I lay awake for what felt like hours, quietly reciting Bible verses, praying, and trying the relaxation techniques that usually help me. For whatever reason, my mind remained active, and rest didn’t come as quickly as I had hoped.

When morning arrived, I still had responsibilities to attend to. There were Vinted orders to package and ship, work to accomplish, and the normal rhythm of family life to keep moving forward. Even though I was tired, the day didn’t pause simply because I hadn’t slept well. Life rarely does.

More Than Physical Fatigue

I’ve noticed that lack of sleep doesn’t just affect my energy — it affects my perspective. When we’re exhausted, little inconveniences can seem much larger than they really are. Motivation is harder to find, emotions can feel heavier, and it’s easier to become discouraged even when nothing has actually gone wrong.

When my husband called during his lunch break, I simply told him I was tired and not very talkative because I hadn’t slept much. What encouraged me most wasn’t that he had all the right words to say. It was that he took the initiative to pray for me. Seeing him continue to grow spiritually and lead in that way was a blessing that reminded me I wasn’t carrying the day alone.

I also realized that while my circumstances hadn’t changed, my mindset began to shift after spending time with the Lord that morning. Prayer, Scripture, and even something as simple as my morning smoothie helped me regain enough strength to keep moving forward. More importantly, God reminded me that His strength is not dependent on mine.

Stay Plugged into the Lord

As I reflected on the day, I couldn’t help but think about how much our bodies depend on rest. While we sleep, our bodies repair themselves and prepare us for another day. It’s a little like plugging in a phone overnight so the battery is full by morning.

Spiritually, we need that same kind of connection every day.

We can’t rely on yesterday’s time with God to carry us through today’s challenges. We need to stay connected to Him throughout the day — especially when we’re tired, overwhelmed, discouraged, or emotionally drained. Our feelings are real, but they don’t have to control our responses. Instead of reacting out of exhaustion, we can pause, pray, and remember where our true strength comes from.

One of my favorite reminders is found in Isaiah 40:31:

“But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.” (Isaiah 40:31, NIV)

That promise doesn’t mean we’ll never feel tired. It means that when our own strength runs out, God’s strength never does. He gives us peace when our minds are restless, joy when our emotions feel heavy, and endurance for whatever the day brings.

Some days we’ll feel energized. Other days, we’ll feel like we’re barely making it through. But on every kind of day, the invitation is the same: stay plugged into the One who never grows weary.

What helps you stay plugged into the Lord throughout the day when you’re feeling physically or emotionally drained?
