I don't think I've ever thought I'd see you again.
Those were the first words she spoke when the door to the hotel opened.
She didn't smile, she just moved out of my way and gave me just enough space to step in. The hallway behind me was quiet except for the distant sound of an elevator and the muffled laughter of strangers returning to their rooms.
We didn't talk for a few seconds.
The room had a sweet fragrance of expensive perfume and freshly made coffee. There was a suitcase next to the bed, unopened, and the city lights illuminated a gentle glow on the floor through the curtains.
My heart was beating too rapidly.
For months we had acted like we were just regular co-workers who happened to be attending the same conferences, talking about the same things and debating things late at night after everyone else had left.
But, at the moment, standing there, thousands of miles away, pretending became impossible.
She closed the door gently behind me.
I thought you wouldn't come," she said quietly.
I swallowed.
"I wasn't sure I should."
She looked away for a second, before giving a little laugh.
"Neither was I."
How It Really Started
We met at an industry conference 3 months ago.
She wasn't pushy about it but she was confident. The kind of person who could hold a room's attention simply by asking the right question. During a workshop, we sat next to one another and joked about the slides of the speaker before introducing ourselves.
After the conference, we stayed in touch.
Nothing inappropriate.
Just articles.
Career advice.
The occasional late-night message that started with work and somehow drifted into conversations about life, regret, ambition, and the strange loneliness that success sometimes brings.
One evening she messaged me.
"Do you ever feel like you're living the life everyone expects... instead of the one you actually want?"
I looked at my screen for nearly 10 minutes before I responded.
“Way too often.”
That was the conversation that changed everything.
