Data management is the discipline of collecting, organizing, protecting, and maintaining an organization’s data so it remains accurate, consistent, secure, and accessible.

It covers a broad range of areas, including:

  • Data Quality: ensuring accuracy, completeness, and reliability
  • Metadata Management: giving context and meaning to data
  • Data Architecture & Modeling: designing how data flows and connects
  • Master & Reference Data Management: maintaining a single source of truth
  • Data Security: protecting data from misuse or breaches

Without structured and strong data management, businesses face:

The CDMP: Your Data Management Career Path

The Certified Data Management Professional (CDMP) is one of the most respected credentials for data management practitioners. Offered by DAMA International, it validates your understanding of data governance, quality, modeling, and architecture, all key to any data-driven organization.

There are three levels: Associate, Practitioner, and Master, with varying experience and exam score requirements.

Requirements

You only need formal work experience if you’re targeting the Master level. However, I’d personally recommend having at least 2 years of experience in data-related roles before attempting the exam, it makes the concepts much easier to grasp.

Cost

  • Exam fee: $311 USD

How to Register

  1. Create an account on the DAMA International website (dama.org)
  2. Purchase the exam voucher
  3. Schedule your exam through Pearson VUE (online proctored or in-person testing center)
  4. You can take the exam from home or at a testing center

Exam Structure

  • Standard exam: 90 minutes, 100 multiple-choice questions
  • ESL version: 110 minutes (extra 20 minutes for non-native English speakers)
  • Passing score: 60% for Associate, 70% for Practitioner

The Data Management Fundamentals exam is based on the 11 core knowledge areas from the DMBoK2, with additional questions from the introductory and concluding chapters.

Document & Content Management (6%): DMBoK Ch. 9: Document Management Systems (DMS), Content Management, Archiving, Metadata for Content.

Data Storage & Operations (6%): DMBoK Ch. 6: Database Management Systems (DBMS), Data Security, Data Recovery, Data Retention.

Data Security (6%): DMBoK Ch. 7: Security Policies, Identity & Access Management (IAM), Encryption, Data Masking.

Data Integration & Interoperability (6%): DMBoK Ch. 8: ETL/ELT, Data Consolidation, APIs, Real-Time Integration, Change Data Capture (CDC).

Master & Reference Data (10%): DMBoK Ch. 10: Definitions, MDM Implementation Styles, Golden Record, Match-Merge Process.

Data Governance (11%): DMBoK Ch. 3: DG Definition & Goals, DG Operating Model, Data Stewardship, Business Glossary.

Data Modeling & Design (11%): DMBoK Ch. 5: Modeling Layers (Conceptual, Logical, Physical), Normalization, Metadata.

Data Quality (11%): DMBoK Ch. 12: Data Quality Dimensions, DQ Framework, Profiling, Cleansing, Monitoring.

Metadata Management (11%): DMBoK Ch. 13: Types of Metadata (Business, Technical), Metadata Repository, Data Lineage

Study Plan

Most people target either Associate or Practitioner level. This plan is tailored for these two levels and based on my experience earning the Practitioner certification.

Depending on your experience in the data field, you should expect to dedicate between 50–120 hours, which includes reading the entire DMBoK book, taking practice exams, and watching supplementary courses on Udemy or YouTube to master specific topics.

You need to work strategically to get a high score. Below is a categorization I used to allocate my time based on the priority and impact of each chapter on the exam.

Tier 1: The “Core Four” (44% of the Exam)

Allocate ~50% of your study time to these:

  • Data Governance (11%)
  • Data Modeling & Design (11%)
  • Data Quality (11%)
  • Metadata Management (11%)

These four topics alone account for nearly half of your exam. Deep understanding here is non-negotiable for passing. Focus on definitions, frameworks, and how these areas interact.

Tier 2: The “Significant Six” (44% of the Exam)

Allocate ~40% of your study time to these:

  • Data Warehousing & BI (10%)
  • Master & Reference Data (10%)
  • Data Architecture (6%)
  • Data Integration & Interoperability (6%)
  • Data Storage & Operations (6%)
  • Data Security (6%)

These are the supporting pillars of data management. You need a solid, practical understanding of each. Pay attention to the key processes and technologies in each area.

Note: Make sure you can distinguish the difference between architecture and data modeling, this is heavily tested.

Tier 3: The “Foundation & Niche” (12% of the Exam)

Allocate ~10% of your study time to these:

  • Document & Content Management (6%)
  • Data Management Process (2%)
  • Data Ethics (2%)
  • Big Data (2%)

These are the foundation of data management. You need a general understanding of each. If you have experience in the field, these will be easier to cover.

Essential Tasks Before the Exam

  1. Read the DMBoK fully and write notes you can access your notes during the exam (it’s open-book!)
  2. Complete multiple practice exams (see recommendations below)
  3. Take the official DAMA practice exam and score at least 90% before booking the real thing. The actual exam can be slightly harder, but this gives you enough understanding of the format and question style.

⭐ Golden Tip: I found many questions in the official exam that were very similar to questions in these Udemy practice tests. Don’t skip them, they’re worth their weight in gold.

Common Pitfalls to Avoid

1. Confusing Similar Concepts

  • Data Architecture vs. Data Modeling
  • Master Data vs. Reference Data

2. Relying Only on the DMBoK The book is dense and theoretical. Use practice exams to translate concepts into exam language, especially for areas where you lack hands-on experience.

3. Not Practicing Under Time Pressure 90 minutes ÷ 100 questions = 54 seconds each. Take 2–3 full timed practice exams or you’ll run out of time.

4. Forgetting Your Notes The exam is open-book!

5. Waiting to Feel “Perfect” If you’re scoring 85–90% on practice exams, book it. Aiming for 100% = procrastination.

6. Skipping the Official Practice Exam Take DAMA’s official practice test. Score 90%+ there, and you’re ready for the real thing.
