Siri finally grew a brain — thanks to Google.
For years, my favorite party trick was asking Siri something slightly complicated and watching it cheerfully reply, “Here’s what I found on the web.” (My friends started calling it “Siri roulette.”)
Well — WWDC 2026 just killed the trick.
Apple walked on stage on June 8th and basically admitted the thing we’ve all known since 2011: Siri was dumb as 💩.
Then they pulled the sheet off iOS 27 — and the headline isn’t a new wallpaper or a rounder icon. It’s that Siri got a brain transplant, and your iPhone got noticeably faster.
Note: there’s a lot in here, and I’m not going to waste your time on which shade of glass a toggle turned. Let’s get into the stuff that actually changes how you use your iPhone every day.

THE NEW SIRI (Apple Intelligence finally grows up)
#1. Siri AI — the brain transplant
Apple rebuilt Siri from the ground up — in collaboration with Google’s Gemini models running locally or on Apple’s own private servers.
What that means in plain English: you can finally have a real back-and-forth.

- Ask a question,
- get a thoughtful answer,
- then say “okay but what about…”
and Siri remembers what you were talking about. No more starting from zero every sentence. No more “Here’s what I found on the web”s.
#2. It actually knows your stuff (personal context)
Here’s where it gets a l’il spooky (in a good way). The new Siri can search across your messages, emails, photos, and files to find things in the moment.

- “What’s the confirmation number for my hotel?” — it digs through that six-week-old email and just tells you.
- “Pull up the restaurant Priya texted me last week” — done.
- “Show me the photos from the lake trip” — there they are.
It’s the assistant Siri always pretended to be. And because developers can plug into it, third-party apps will eventually be searchable the same way.
#3. Onscreen awareness
Siri can now see what’s on your screen and act on it.

Real example Apple demoed: a friend texts you about a potluck, and you can ask Siri “what should I bring?” — it reads the thread, brainstorms with you, and then drops the recipe straight into Notes.
It understands the context you’re already looking at instead of making you re-explain everything.
#4. Real answers, from the actual world
Old Siri knew your alarm and roughly the weather.
New Siri taps broad world knowledge and goes to the web when it needs to. “when’s the next solar eclipse?”, “is this band touring this year” — and gives you an actual answer instead of a list of blue links.

#5. It gets things done across your apps
This is the one that’ll quietly save you the most time by handing off some tasks to Siri.
It can now take systemwide actions — draft an email from scratch, pull together a set of photos and share them, edit something and send it off — by chaining actions across apps without you tapping through five screens.
Combine this with #2 and #3 and you start to see the pitch: an assistant that knows your stuff, sees your screen, and can actually do the thing.
#6. The Siri app — and a new way to summon it
Two structural changes worth knowing:
- First, there’s now a standalone Siri app — think ChatGPT or Gemini, but Apple’s. You can revisit old conversations, start new ones, and it privately syncs your chat history across all your devices through iCloud (wtf? Storage should be free). Start a thought on your iPhone, finish it on your Mac.
- Second, beyond “Hey Siri” and the side button, you can now swipe down from the Dynamic Island to start a conversation. Small thing, but it makes the deep, typed-out questions feel a lot more natural than yelling at your phone in public. (We’ve all been there.)

PERFORMANCE (the unsexy stuff that matters most)
This might be my favorite part of the whole keynote. Apple spent real stage time on a “make your existing iPhone feel new again” instead of only focusing on showcasing new features.
And the benchmark numbers are not small.
#7. Apps launch up to 30% faster
Apps open up to 30% faster. The detail I love: Apple ran that benchmark on an iPhone 11 Pro Max — a six-year-old phone — which is also a not-so-subtle flex that iOS 27 still supports it.
#8. Your Photos library loads up to 70% faster
New shots show up in your library up to 70% faster after you take them. If you’ve ever snapped a photo, opened Photos, and stared at a spinning thumbnail — yeah, that.
#9. AirDrop is up to 80% faster
AirDrop transfers are up to 80% faster, and your iPhone finds nearby people quicker too. For anyone who shoves giant videos between an iPhone and a Mac all day (me), this is the kind of boring upgrade you feel every single time.
#10. Search that actually works + smoother switching
Apple rebuilt search in Spotlight, Photos, and Mail to be more stable and efficient, and gave Mail’s Top Hits a new relevance ranking so the result you want is actually on top.
Handoff between Wi-Fi and cellular is smoother, and there’s a grab-bag of under-the-hood wins — quicker camera launches, faster NFC taps, better Bluetooth power management.
PHOTOS GETS SCARY-GOOD AI
#11. Spatial Reframing — reposition the camera after the shot
This one made me actually say “WHAT?!” out loud.
Spatial Reframing lets you change the angle and position of a photo after you’ve already taken it. Touch and drag, and AI re-renders the perspective — generating new detail only where the angle shifted.
It’s built on the same spatial models Apple uses for Vision Pro, and it works on old photos, even ones shot on a non-Apple phone.

That slightly-off group photo where everyone’s a little too high in the frame? Fixable now.
#12. Extend — generate beyond the edges of the frame
Extend grows a photo past its original borders.

Give a cramped subject some breathing room, or change the aspect ratio — AI fills in the new space.
#13. Clean Up got a serious upgrade (and a watermark)
The Clean Up tool (remove that photobomber / trash can / ex) now does dramatically more convincing fills, even in busy scenes.

And here’s a responsible touch: anything you edit with Apple Intelligence — Clean Up, Extend, all of it — gets an invisible SynthID watermark baked in, quietly flagging it as AI-edited. Good. We’re going to need that.
#14. Image Playground goes photorealistic
Image Playground used to do cartoony, illustrated stuff. Now, powered by a new model on Apple’s private cloud, it can generate photorealistic images in basically any style — and you can tweak results by describing changes or by circling/brushing an object.

SAFARI
#15. Tab Topics — Safari cleans up your 47 open tabs
Safari now automatically groups your open tabs into topics. For example, all your weekend-trip tabs in one group, all your job-hunt tabs in another — and it keeps sorting new ones as you go.

#16. Notify Me — let Safari watch a page for you
Ask Safari to watch a web page for changes — a restock, a price drop, concert tickets — and it’ll ping you when something moves.

No more refreshing the same product page 30 times a day like a hasty.
#17. Describe an Extension — build a tool by just asking
This is wild: you can create a custom Safari extension by describing what you want. “Add a button that saves and rates recipes.”

Safari generates the extension and drops it in your toolbar. No code, no App Store hunt.
MESSAGES, MAIL & PHONE
#18. One-tap suggestions in Messages
Based on what you’re actually talking about, Messages now surfaces one-tap actions — turn “let’s do Thursday at 7” into a reminder, spin a note out of a conversation.
And if someone asks for photos, it finds the right ones by reading the keywords, people, and places in the thread.

#19. Smart Reply that sounds like you
Smart Reply now writes in your personal style — and in Mail and Messages it adapts to who you’re talking to (you don’t text your boss the way you text your group chat).
#20. Call Context — the Phone app does your homework
Call a business, and the Phone app proactively surfaces info you might need — like pulling your flight confirmation code out of Mail when you ring the airline.

It runs entirely on-device and only looks at who you’re calling, not what you say.
#21. Draw in Messages
A small joy: there’s now a built-in drawing canvas in Messages, using the same tools as Notes and Markup, so you can scribble a quick note or doodle inside a conversation.

#22. Split a bill by photographing the receipt
Okay, this one’s going to end friendships (kidding).
Snap a photo of a restaurant receipt, tap to assign items to each person — tax and tip included — and Wallet generates the Apple Cash requests.

It lives in Wallet and Messages, ties into Apple Watch, and even shows up as a Siri-in-Camera trick. (Apple Cash is US-only, heads up.)
#23. Create a Pass — turn any card or ticket digital
If you have a physical gym membership card, a paper concert ticket, or a loyalty card, you can now convert it into a custom digital pass in Wallet.
Fewer things in your actual wallet, which was always the dream.

#24. Passwords that fix themselves (this is the future, quietly)
This is one of the most futuristic things Apple showed and almost nobody’s talking about it.
The Passwords app can now agentically upgrade a weak or breached password for you — with one tap, Apple Intelligence and Safari go to the site, sign in, rotate the password to a strong one, and save it.

THE AI ODDS & ENDS
#25. Describe an event, describe a Shortcut
The “just describe it” pattern shows up everywhere now.
- In Calendar, type out an event in plain language and it figures out the title, contacts, and location.

- In Shortcuts, describe the automation you want — “set a different alarm each night based on my first calendar event tomorrow” — and it builds the steps for you.

The single biggest barrier to Shortcuts was always making them. That barrier just dropped.
#26. Home gets smarter
The Home app now bundles related accessory alerts into a single activity — one notification that updates as things happen, instead of seven buzzes.

And HomeKit Secure Video (with iCloud+) gets AI text descriptions of clips, searchable footage (“show me the package delivery”), and a “Noteworthy” section that floats the moments that actually matter.

#27. Maps Flyover gets the AI treatment
Apple Maps Flyover now blends aerial imagery with AI for noticeably richer, more detailed views, and Visited Places tracking got more accurate.

HEALTH, FITNESS & AIRPODS
#28. Perimenopause & menopause support in Cycle Tracking
A genuinely meaningful one: Cycle Tracking in Health now supports perimenopause and menopause, including notifications about cycle deviations.

Long overdue, and it’ll matter to a lot of people.
#29. Workout Buddy goes solo (and bilingual)
The AI Workout Buddy now works on Apple Watch without your iPhone nearby, speaks Spanish in addition to English, and folds in more of your fitness history for better motivation mid-run.
#30. AirPods: a real EQ and heart-rate sync
AirPods get a proper custom equalizer — actual low/mid/high bands you can shape, not just three canned presets.

And AirPods Pro 3 can now sync your heart-rate data through iPhone via expanded GymKit, so your earbuds double as a fitness sensor.

ACCESSIBILITY (quietly some of the best work here)
#31. Automatic subtitles for any video
iOS 27 can generate synced captions, on-device, for any video that doesn’t have them — clips you record, clips someone sends you, stuff you stream. It can even translate existing captions.
It starts in English (US/Canada), and it’s the kind of feature that’s life-changing for some people and handy for everyone watching something on mute. (This one spans iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple TV too.)
#32. Smarter VoiceOver, Magnifier, and Voice Control
VoiceOver and Magnifier now give richer AI descriptions of images and surroundings — press the Action button and ask about what’s in front of you.

Voice Control lets you navigate by describing a button instead of memorizing a label or number.
And Accessibility Reader now handles denser material with on-demand summaries and translation.

FOR PARENTS — this got a LOT of stage time
Apple leaned hard into child safety this year, partnering with the American Academy of Pediatrics. If you’ve got kids, this is arguably the most important section.
#33. Ask to Browse + contact approval
Setting up a child account now flips on age-appropriate protections across the system, and Setup Assistant lets you pick exactly which apps the kid starts with.

Ask to Browse makes them request permission to visit a new website in Safari, and you can require approval before they connect with any new contact in Messages, FaceTime, or Phone.

#34. Time Allowances, Schedules & a redesigned Screen Time

You can now set daily time allowances by category — Entertainment, Games, Social — with age-based starting points informed by child-development experts.
Schedules let you carve out windows (a “School” block, say) where only certain apps work.
The whole Screen Time dashboard got redesigned with at-a-glance usage and one-tap tweaks.
And Communication Safety, which already blurs nudity by default for under-18s, now also steps in to block detected gore or violent content in shared images and videos.
QUICK HITS (smaller, but real — not just cosmetic fluff)
Bundling the legitimately useful smaller stuff so you don’t miss it:
- iCloud Shared Albums now share at full resolution across platforms, and you can set an album to auto-expire.
- A new extra-large Home Screen widget size that fills a full page.

- Smart name suggestions for files and folders based on what’s inside them.
- Faster AirPlay to HomePod/Apple TV and faster HomeKit pairing.
- The Liquid Glass slider — for everyone who found last year’s see-through look hard to read, you can now dial it from ultra-clear to fully tinted. (I’ll allow this one cosmetic mention because the complaints were real.)

Who gets it, and when
Compatibility: Here’s the kindest part — iOS 27 runs on every iPhone that ran iOS 26, all the way back to the iPhone 11 and the iPhone SE 2. It’s the most widely available iOS release ever. Nobody got left behind this year.
The Apple Intelligence and Siri AI features need an iPhone 15 Pro / 15 Pro Max or an iPhone 16 (or newer) tho. The fanciest on-device bits — the most expressive Siri voices, top-tier dictation — want an iPhone Air or 17 Pro. So the base OS is universal; the AI is not.
That’s the iOS 27 update that matters — minus the toggle-color tourism. The big story is simple: your iPhone got faster today, and it’s getting a genuinely smart Siri before the year’s out.
After 15 years of Siri roulette, I’ll believe the second part when I’m talking to it — but the demos were the most convincing Apple’s ever shown.
