Introduction
Fermi’s Paradox is one of the most puzzling questions in science: if the universe is vast, old, and full of stars and planets, then where is everybody? Why do we see no signs of alien civilizations? One popular idea is the Great Filter, the notion that somewhere between the birth of life and interstellar expansion lies a nearly impossible barrier. Most civilizations never pass it.
Traditionally, the Great Filter is imagined as a wall: either you break through it, or you perish. Do or die. But I want to offer a different angle, one inspired as much by history and human politics as by astrobiology: perhaps the Great Filter is not a wall at all, but a set of moving goalposts.
The Classic View: One Fatal Step
In the conventional version, the Great Filter sits at one stage of the chain:
- Life originates (abiogenesis).
- Multicellular life emerges.
- Intelligence evolves.
- Civilizations develop technology.
- They expand into space.
If the filter is behind us (say, abiogenesis is almost impossible), then we are incredibly lucky. If the filter is ahead (say, most civilizations self-destruct), then our future looks grim.
My Model: Do or Start Over
History and logic suggest another pattern. When civilizations fall, they don’t always vanish entirely. They reset. The Mayans collapsed but humans remained. The Roman Empire fell, but Europe eventually rebuilt. Even mass extinctions on Earth, like the Permian or the dinosaur-ending asteroid, didn’t wipe out all life. Survivors rebuilt from what was left.
So perhaps the Great Filter is not do or die but do or start over. And crucially: the starting point can be anywhere.
A total sterilization resets the filter to abiogenesis. A mass extinction resets it to the level of intelligence. A collapsed civilization resets it to rebuilding societies.
Each fall pushes the goalposts back, not always to zero, but always at a cost.
The Filter Moves Up
When life succeeds at one stage, the filter shifts higher, from life to intelligence to civilization.
The Filter Falls Back
When life fails, the filter drops back down, sometimes by one step, sometimes all the way.
The Shrinking Window
Every reset eats into the planet’s habitability window. Time is not infinite. Eventually, the star dies, the climate turns hostile, or resources are exhausted. Too many resets mean the window closes before expansion.
Why This Matters
This model explains both why we are here and why the universe seems silent. Life may arise often, and civilizations may bloom, but each collapse resets the clock. The cumulative effect is that very few make it far enough, fast enough, to spread between the stars.
It also re-frames the paradox: the question is not just “Is there a filter?” but “How many retries does a planet get before the window closes?”
Historical Analogy
I borrowed this idea from political debates where people talk about “moving the goalposts.” In politics, once you answer one demand, the bar shifts to the next. In history, new societies often rise stronger after collapse, but only if they have time and resources left. Think of how the United States surpassed the European empires, not by carrying their baggage, but by using their knowledge without their chains.
Mars colonies may one day do the same to Earth, not breaking through a single wall, but navigating a sequence of shifting goalposts.
Conclusion
The Great Filter may not be a single do-or-die barrier. It may be a dynamic process: succeed and the filter moves up, fail and it drops back down. Over billions of years, civilizations play this game of advancement and collapse until either they finally leap to the stars or the window closes.
That is why the sky is silent. Most are still busy starting over.
