When Life Isn’t Linear: The 20s Nobody Talks About

Let’s not beat around the bush — I’m almost 24, and it’s been two years since I graduated from college. While many of my peers are getting married, starting families, and seemingly moving through life’s milestones on time, I find myself in a different kind of chapter.

I’m still figuring things out.

Some days I think about doing an MBA abroad. If that’s the path, I need to start studying, planning, saving. Other days, I wonder if I should just focus on building more experience, maybe switch roles, or stick to my current job — which, honestly, pays decently. But nothing feels final. Everything feels… undecided.

And then, there’s life on the other side — the side where people my age are saying “I do.”

A Glimpse into the Other Side

Recently, I attended my cousin’s wedding. She’s around my age. I watched her walk down the aisle, radiant and glowing, ready to start a new chapter with someone she loves.

For a brief moment, I imagined what that would feel like — the flowers, the celebration, the love. I even caught myself manifesting my own aisle moment. But reality hit, just as quickly.

Because deep down, I know: I come from a different world.

The Silent Divide No One Talks About

I didn’t study just to explore. I studied because I had to survive. For me, education wasn’t just about knowledge — it was my ticket to stability.

And that’s the difference I see so clearly now.

Many of the young adults getting married, settling down early, come from families with financial security. For them, work isn’t about survival. A job is something to do, not something they depend on. They can afford to plan weddings and build homes — because their foundation was already laid.

But people like us? We’re still laying the bricks. We’re still building ourselves.

That’s why some of us delay marriage — not because we’re anti-love, but because we can’t afford to love the way we want to just yet. Emotionally. Financially. Energetically.

The Quiet Conflict Within

There are days I ask myself honestly: Do I really want to get married? Am I ready to give up my freedom, my goals, and parts of my identity to become someone’s wife — and later, someone’s mother?

And then, I look around and see friends in their 30s who are unmarried, living beautiful lives, growing at their own pace, thriving in their own timeline.

And I feel seen again.

A Note to Those Like Me

If you’ve ever felt out of sync with the world around you — this is for you.

It’s okay to feel lost. It’s okay to feel unsure. And yes, it’s even okay to feel a little envious at times of people whose lives seem simpler.

Just remember: our race didn’t start from the same line. Some people inherited ease. Others, like us, are still earning their footing.

And that’s not something to be ashamed of — that’s something to be proud of.

In the End

Our timelines don’t have to match society’s milestones.

If you’re building your life from scratch, trust that your pace is valid. You are not late. You are just rising from a different foundation. And sometimes, the strongest structures take the longest to build.

So give yourself time — To grow. To learn. To live.

You’re not behind. You’re just from a different world. And that world is just as beautiful.

With love, -Gypsy Petals
