Most classrooms have two kids who can’t read the book you handed them

The number that should bother any school administrator is 7.1%. That’s the pooled worldwide prevalence of dyslexia among primary school children in a peer-reviewed meta-analysis.¹ Work it out for a class of thirty and you get roughly two students, every year, in every room, holding the same textbook as everyone else and getting far less out of it.
The awkward part is that the fix has been sitting in the supply cupboard as a problem, not a solution. Learning content lives on paper: bound textbooks, photocopied handouts, library books nobody’s allowed to write in. A student who needs that text read aloud or converted to speech needs it digital first. And the usual ways of getting it there are bad. A flatbed scanner crushes the words nearest the spine. A phone photo comes out skewed and half-legible to OCR software.
