Spoiler: Children's novel “A Dog So Small “ (Japanese Translation Title: “まぼろしの小さな犬” The Phantom Little Dog)

I read the children's book "The Phantom Little Dog" from the Iwanami Junior Library. It is a story that depicts the disappointment and struggles of a boy named Ben, who wanted a dog, until he finally gets one.

The boy begs his parents for a dog.

少年は犬が欲しいと両親にねだります。

The parents said that they cannot have a dog where they currently live (London, England).

両親は今住んでいる場所(イギリスのロンドン)で犬を飼うことはできない、と言いました。

One day, the boy heard through a letter from his grandfather that he would give him a dog. So, he visits his grandparents’ house.

ある日、少年は手紙を通して祖父から犬をやるという話しを聞きました。それで、祖父母の住む家を訪れます。

However, what he received from his grandmother was not a real dog, but a drawing of a dog. The dog’s name is Chikichito. It was a souvenir that his grandmother had received.

しかし、祖母からもらったのは本物の犬ではなく、絵に書かれた犬でした。犬の名前はチキチトです。祖母がお土産としてもらったものでした。

Disappointed, the boy takes the drawing home. He loses the drawing on the way back.

少年はがっかりした末に絵をもらって帰宅します。絵は帰る途中に無くしてしまいます。

As he wishes to someday have a real dog, an imaginary dog begins to appear in the boy’s mind. It is smaller than any dog and responds to the boy’s calls.

いつか本物の犬を手に入れたいと願っているうちに、少年の中に想像上の犬が現れるようになります。どの犬よりも小さく、少年の呼びかけに応じてくれます。

However, this dog only appears when the boy closes his eyes.

ただ、その犬は少年が目を閉じている時だけにしか現れません。

The boy names this dog Chikichito, as he can meet it whenever and wherever he closes his eyes. It even starts to appear in his dreams.

少年はいつでもどこでも目を閉じれば会えるその犬にチキチトと名前をつけます。夢にまで現れるようになります。

In order to see Chikichito, he begins to close his eyes all the time.

チキチトに会いたいがために四六時中目を閉じる仕草をするようになります。

One day, while walking in the city with his family, he crosses the street with his eyes closed. There, the boy gets hit by a car and is injured.

ある日、家族と一緒に街を歩いていて、目を閉じたまま道路を渡ります。そこで少年は車にひかれて怪我をします。

The boy’s injury was not life-threatening, so he was hospitalized for two weeks.

少年の怪我は命にかかわるものではなかったので、入院する期間は2週間でした。

After that, no matter how much he closed his eyes, Chikichito no longer appeared. Only a transparent dog seemed to exist. The boy stopped closing his eyes.

それからというもの、少年はいくら目を閉じても、もうチキチタは現れなくなりました。透明な犬だけがいるようになりました。少年はもう目を閉じることはやめました。

One day during his hospitalization, he received a letter saying that Tilly, the dog at his grandparents’ house, was pregnant and had given birth to nine puppies. The boy visits his grandparents’ house again to see the puppies. He starts to name and take care of them. He decides to call one of the puppies Chikichito. A few days later, the boy returned home.

入院中のある日、祖父母の住む家にいる犬・ティリーが妊娠して9匹の犬が生まれたという手紙を受け取ります。少年はその子犬たちを見るために再び祖父母の家を訪れます。子犬たちに名前をつけて世話をするようになりました。9匹のうち1匹をチキチトと呼ぶことにしました。数日経って、少年は家に帰りました。

The grandfather sold or gave away eight of the nine puppies to relatives and monks. However, he kept the last one, Chikichito, for the boy.

祖父は、9匹の犬のうち8匹は少年の親戚や修道士たちに売ったり譲ったりしました。それでも最後の1匹チキチタだけは残してくれました。

The boy’s family decided to move to another location in London. Since their living environment changed, the boy convinced his parents to allow him to have a dog.

少年の家族はロンドン市内で別の場所に引っ越すことになりました。住環境が変わったので、少年は両親を説得して犬が飼えるようになりました。

He went to his grandparents’ house to pick up Chikichito. However, Chikichito was no longer the dog he remembered. It had grown large and fat, and had a timid personality, which was the exact opposite of what the boy had wished for.

祖父母の家に行き、チキチタを引き取りにいきました。しかし、もうチキチタは少年の知っていた姿ではありませんでした。大きくなり太っていて、怯えたがる性格の犬で、それは少年が望んだものとは正反対の犬でした。

Once again, the boy was disappointed. Moreover, since the dog had been raised with the name Brown, it did not respond when he called it Chikichito. Despite his attachment to the name Chikichito, it felt like Chikichito was gone forever.

またしても少年はがっかりします。そして、その犬はブラウンという名前で育てられていたので、チキチタと呼んでも反応しません。チキチタという名前にこだわっていたのに、もうチキチタはどこにもいなくなったのです。

He tries to let go of Brown in a park in London. He tries to keep the dog away, but no matter how much distance he puts between them, Brown follows him.

ロンドンの公園でブラウンを手放そうとします。なんとか犬を遠ざけようとしますが、どんなに距離を置いてもブラウンは少年についてきます。

The boy realized, “Things that cannot be obtained will never be within reach no matter how much I stretch out my hand. If I don’t embrace what I can have, I will gain nothing.” He accepted reality, decided to keep the dog named Brown, and tried to forget about the existence of Chikichito.

少年は悟りました。「手に入らないものはどんなに手を伸ばしても手に入らない。手に入るものを手にしなければ何も得られない。」少年は現実を受け入れ、ブラウンという犬を飼うことに決めて、チキチタという存在は忘れ去ろうとするのでした。
