You Don’t Just Watch; You Absorb

We are constantly writing on the pages of our souls with our choices, our attention, our silence.

Our souls are always becoming, and we get to decide who we’re becoming into.

That’s because we are always letting things in even when we think we’re just scrolling, listening, or watching.

Something deeper is happening.

Every action like what we click on, what we dwell on, what we listen to, makes a quiet deposit.

Every word you hear, every image you sit with, every story you entertain… it doesn’t just pass through.

It settles.

Quietly.

It plants something.

And over time, you start to feel it in how you see yourself, how you think, how you move through the world.

“Guard your heart with all diligence, for out of it flow the issues of life.” — Proverbs 4:23

A spiritual principle that is as practical as it is sacred. The heart isn’t just a metaphor but the control center of our being. What fills our hearts eventually spills into our thoughts, mood, relationships, and worldview.

I used to think that scripture was only about protecting emotions. But it’s deeper than that.

The heart — your inner space, your center — is where everything begins.

What you allow in will eventually show up in how you live, how you speak, how you love, and how you think.

We often forget that the content we consume isn’t just passing through; it’s planting seeds.

What we watch, hear, and expose ourselves to enters through the eyes and ears — the gateways to the heart.

The funny video you replay five times.

The music you fall asleep to.

The Instagram caption you scroll past and subconsciously internalize.

These things don’t just entertain; they embed.

You are not just what you eat. You are what you take in visually, audibly, and emotionally.

We downplay it a lot: “It’s just a song,” “Just a show,” “Just a conversation.”

However, if you’ve ever walked away from a phone call feeling heavy, or watched something that shifted your whole mood for hours, then you know:

Your soul has ears. Your mind remembers. Your body reacts.

You don’t need to go looking for negativity. Misery loves company.

Sometimes, just keeping your eyes open in the wrong direction is enough to pull you off track.

One lesson I now carry closely is that boundaries aren’t about being harsh or hyper-spiritual.

They’re about protecting peace.

Filtering isn’t a limitation — it’s protection. A form of spiritual hygiene.

You wouldn’t leave your front door wide open in the middle of the night. So why leave your soul open to every sound, image, and voice passing through?

It’s not about being perfect. It’s about being aware.

It’s about pausing before you press play. Noticing what stirs in you when you hear that lyric. Questioning why you feel restless after certain conversations.

And then choose better. Even if it’s just once a day.

Because over time, those small choices? They’re not small. They’re soul-shaping.

Every day, I’m becoming someone, and I don’t want to hand over that process to randomness or noise.

The scary part? Much of this happens unnoticed.

Not all influences shout. Some whisper. And the soul listens to whispers.

That feeling of being off-center? Of waking up already tired? Of being restless, easily triggered, and confused about what you want or who you are?

Sometimes that’s not a lack of clarity — it’s too much noise.

I’ve had to ask myself:

Who am I listening to too much? What have I consumed that’s shifting how I feel about myself? What kind of conversations leave me anxious or excited? What do I feel after watching, listening to, or reading this?

That is because this stuff adds up. Little by little, it becomes you.

Discernment is glow work. When your soul is clean, centered, and at peace, people can feel it even before you speak.

The glow isn’t aesthetic — it’s energetic. It’s the lightness that comes from living with intention.

Your soul is not passive. It is always absorbing. Always writing.

It is why it doesn’t hurt to ask: Is what I’m consuming feeding me or fading me?

The things you allow in become the things you carry.
