The Truth About Spiritual Power

The religions of the African Diaspora are not for the weak; they require a great deal of discipline, sacrifice, commitment, and generosity. To serve God / the Gods and the Good Spirits is a full time job, and I mean this literally — that is why I am so persistent about finding yourself a reputed practitioner, and letting them work for you.

And this is not about having some kind of privilege in our distance to God / the gods, and the Good Spirits, because we are all connected to them exactly in the same way. This is about two main reasons:

a) understanding and experience of ritual procedure, which is usually quite complex;

and b) being respectful of the choices that the Spirits have made, because each one of us (the true ones, of course) has been chosen to do this job. We literally came into this plane of incarnation to do this work, and if you think that we can choose not to do it, you are wrong.

There is also an element of danger that you just can’t ignore. Spirits with harmful intentions exist, and they can be very, very dangerous — and I mean lethally dangerous, for your body and mind. You have no idea of how many people who think that they are talking directly to the Orishas, are just being deceived by this kind of entity, who’s feeding their delusion. You don’t want to know how this ends.

And let me add this: 99,9% of what you can find online is nothing but a show for engagement, and has no relation whatsoever to the truth of what these religions are. They want to sell you the idea that everyone can do whatever they want, jumping over all the reasons cited above, often falling deeply into cultural appropiation — with the sole intention of taking your money. I’ve had customers come to me terrified after receiving threats from an alleged spiritual worker, just to take a look at their website, and find nothing but a complete fraud.

And in the end, the attraction for our religions is about the (extremely colonized) idea of what power is. Most people think that power is just getting what you want from the Spirits, like a spoiled baby who demands more and more sweets. But the truth is that being a part of these religions is NOT about power, it’s about service; to the Spirits, and to the people who need their help.

Spirits are not an ATM, and magical work is not a credit card to take cash from it. We don’t have any power, we are merely the link between humanity and Spirit; and we don’t live a life of power, we live a life of joyful and grateful servitude. We are blessed indeed, but this is work, and discipline, and deep surrender, and many, many challenges — I’m not going into detail, because honestly, you would not believe the things I have survived.

Spirits are our divine family, and just like a parent will not give in to a child’s tantrum, and make decisions for their children until they are old enough to make their own, so do the Spirits. A parent loves their child beyond measure, but they allow or disallow according to what they see as better for the child; and so do the Spirits. A parent will keep away their children from danger, no matter how much they want whatever is bad for them; and so do the Spirits.

So, anyone who’s feeding your greed, your delusion, or your hunger for power by trying to sell you initiations, should not be trusted. Anyone who claims to sells secrets is by definition a fraud, because as I have said many times already, there are no secrets, there are only levels of awareness. Initiations are not about secrets revealed, it’s about levels of responsibility within the religion as a community, and about levels of responsibility towards both Spirits and customers. If you want to see more, and to do more, you need to become more, and this applies to both initiates and non-initiates alike. Be careful out there.
