My KWOC 2024 Experience: My Journey into Open Source

Embarking on the Kharagpur Winter of Code (KWOC) 2024 was a monumental step in my journey as a developer. As someone who had never contributed to open source before, I was both nervous and excited. What started as a leap into the unknown soon turned into an inspiring and transformative experience that I will cherish forever.

Through KWOC, I had the opportunity to work on real-world projects, interact with talented mentors and contributors, and immerse myself in the open-source community. Organized by KOSS (Kharagpur Open Source Society) and IIT Kharagpur, this program not only introduced me to the vast possibilities of open source but also taught me the importance of collaboration, resilience, and continuous learning.

Projects and Contributions

During KWOC, I contributed to four unique and impactful projects. Each project posed its own challenges and gave me valuable lessons about code quality, responsiveness, and scalability. Here’s a detailed breakdown of my contributions:

1. Shortify

  • Pull Request: Small Fixes #12
  • Related Issue: Slight Fixes in various components
  • Highlights:
  • Added .sqlite to .gitignore to ensure cleaner repositories.
  • Streamlined routing and introduced flags for better navbar/footer control.
  • Improved responsiveness, fixed console errors, and ensured a smoother user experience

2. Chessed

  • Pull Request: 🔀Made App Responsive and Dynamic #26
  • Issue: ⭕Responsiveness
  • Highlights:
  • Made the static chessboard responsive and introduced dynamic updates for viewport changes.
  • Enhanced chess piece movement logic, adding drag-and-drop and click-to-move features.
  • Redesigned player nameplates and improved modal UI for a better gaming experience.

3. Beautiify

4. Metaverse

My Learning Journey

When I started KWOC, I had only a basic understanding of open source. The program introduced me to so much more — how to navigate codebases, resolve merge conflicts, write meaningful pull requests, and collaborate effectively.

One of the biggest challenges I faced was while working on Chessed. Initially, I thought making the chessboard responsive would be a straightforward task involving minor CSS tweaks. However, I quickly realized that the existing logic was rigid and not designed for dynamic layouts. Reworking the entire chessboard mechanics to adapt to screen sizes was demanding but immensely rewarding. It taught me how to think critically about UI dynamics and approach complex problems step by step.

Another highlight was tackling the GitHub API rate limit issue in Beautiify. It was my first time working with APIs at this level, and I learned how to optimize API usage while implementing features like infinite scrolling and lazy loading.

The Metaverse 404 page redesign introduced me to 3D rendering on the web, something I had never explored before. Working with Spline models and integrating them into a responsive design was fascinating and opened up a new domain of web development for me.

Beyond the technical skills, KWOC taught me the importance of clean, reusable code and maintaining a balance between creativity and functionality.

Reflections and Gratitude

KWOC has been much more than just a coding program for me. It was an introduction to a thriving community of developers, mentors, and like-minded individuals. The interactions I had with mentors and project admins were incredibly insightful. Their guidance helped me navigate challenges and grow as a contributor.

I am deeply thankful to KOSS, IIT Kharagpur, and the entire KWOC organizing team for creating this platform. Special thanks to the project maintainers — your patience, feedback, and encouragement made this journey smooth and fulfilling. Lastly, I want to thank my fellow contributors for fostering a collaborative environment that made learning fun and engaging.

Acknowledgements To Mentors

Conclusion

Participating in KWOC 2024 was a milestone in my development journey. It gave me the confidence to dive deeper into open source and contribute meaningfully to real-world projects. As I move forward, I am excited to continue exploring the open-source ecosystem, contributing to impactful projects, and growing as a developer.

To anyone considering their first steps into open source, I wholeheartedly recommend programs like KWOC. They are a gateway to endless learning opportunities and an incredibly supportive community. I look forward to many more such experiences in the future!
