FSR 4 works on older GPUs. The code proves it. So why is AMD still quiet?

There’s a moment in every tech controversy where the facts become undeniable and the only thing left to explain is the silence. AMD is living in that moment right now.

FSR 4, AMD’s most advanced upscaling technology to date — is officially exclusive to RDNA 4 hardware, the Radeon RX 9000 series. The company’s justification was always technical: FSR 4 relies on FP8 instructions, a capability only present in their newest architecture. It was a reasonable explanation. Until AMD accidentally blew it up themselves.

In August 2025, AMD mistakenly published the FSR 4 source code on GitHub as part of their FidelityFX SDK 2.0 release. Inside that code was an INT8 version of FSR 4, a variant designed to run on older hardware. The files were pulled within hours, but the internet had already made copies.

The community got to work immediately. A Reddit user compiled the leaked files into a working DLL, compatible with any game that supported FSR 3.1 through a simple file swap. Independent testing by Hardware Unboxed, VideoCardz, and ComputerBase confirmed the results: FSR 4 INT8 delivers noticeably better image quality than FSR 3.1 on RDNA 2 and RDNA 3 GPUs, with a performance cost of 9 to 13 percent, manageable for most users who prioritize visuals.

That was October 2025. As of early 2026, AMD still hasn’t released it officially.

What makes this harder to ignore is the contrast with NVIDIA. At CES 2026, NVIDIA released DLSS 4.5, a substantial image quality upgrade, and made it available all the way back to RTX 20 series GPUs from 2018. Yes, older cards take a performance hit of around 20 percent. But NVIDIA gave users the choice. AMD hasn’t given Radeon owners anything.

When Hardware Unboxed asked AMD directly about FSR 4 INT8 support in February 2026, the response was: “No updates to share at this time.” AMD’s Senior VP of GPU Technologies and Engineering, Andrej Zdravkovic, was asked at CES 2026 whether a beta for RDNA 3 was possible. His answer: “That’s currently not in the plan, but thanks for the hint.”

The technology exists. The demand is real. The only missing piece is a decision.

For owners of RDNA 2 and RDNA 3 GPUs, cards that are between three and five years old, this isn’t a minor inconvenience. It’s a question of whether AMD values the loyalty of its existing user base as much as it values pushing people toward new hardware.

The answer, so far, has been silence.
