Having been nominated for the Grammys 15 times, and won 7, Jacob is the first British act in history to win four Grammys for each of his first four albums. Many people have been privileged to witness his musical journey with our very own eyes. Jacob Collier’s latest release, Djesse Vol. 4, exemplifies his ever-evolving creativity while showcasing a refined musical maturity. This final installment of the Djesse series balances innovation with accessibility, making it both a welcoming entry point for new listeners and an ambitious expansion of his artistic boundaries.

Here comes Vol.4 with the song that had the whole musical space on a choke hold, Bridge over Troubled Water featuring John Legend and Tori Kelly, delivering an old classic song afresh, harmonically mesmerizing the ethos of the heart and mind, amassing significant streams on Spotify and Youtube in the past 6 months.

“Bridge Over Troubled Water,” which is one of the most enduring songs from the past four decades, won the GRAMMY Award for Record of the Year and Song of the Year in 1971. It also reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart on February 28, 1970, and stayed at the top of the charts for six weeks. Now being re-made by Jacob, the song was recently nominated and was awarded the Best Arrangement, Instrumental or Acappella category at the Grammy’s 2025, the album was also nominated for the Album of the Year 2025 though it ultimately lost to Beyonce’s Cowboy Carter in the category.”

The Data Curation

The data used for this article were obtained from Chartmetric (showing the number of streams on YouTube, Spotify, and Shazam) and WARM for the analysis of airplay per country and city.

I used the period November 9th, 2024 to 7th February 2025 from WARM for the radio airplay analysis per country and city.

Chartmetric — Data Streaming

For easier handling, I separately download YouTube, Spotify, and Shazam Data within a 6-month timeframe. Each file is then formatted correctly in Excel in fields like “Date” and “Numbers”.

a) I cleaned the data on Tableau Prep making changes and removing all duplicates and null values from the data sets.

b) I cut the title of the track and the artist's name as it was the same throughout the whole column.

c) I formatted the dates as dates, numbers as numbers, and renamed the columns.

d) The Shazam, Youtube, and Spotify data from Chartmetric were in separate columns, and I started by separating the date and time using the text-to-columns function.

e) The Spotify and YouTube data didn’t need any further curation, so I just created output for both sets of data and ran the flow.

f) Moving to Tableau Desktop, I created graphs showing the evolution of radio airplay, Spotify Streams, and YouTube views in time.

Number of Plays per Month: The data retrieved from Chartmetric shows the influence of the pre-grammy talk and having data for 6 months helped show the rise of the search for the song via Shazam, YouTube, and Spotify.

Shows the period in which there were spikes in the listening and streaming of the song.

Airplay Per Country: The data was retrieved from WARM from the date 09/11/2024 and put together to have a complete visualization of the world map that played the songs in their countries and cities. Some data were excluded such as the Channel ID, ISRC number, etc. Then the charts were separated to include the Q4 and Q1 representation of the countries that played the songs on their radio and the frequency. Finally, the top 10 radio stations and countries where the music was played were shown in the dataset.

The countries where the radio play was interesting to me were France, China, and the United States since the ISRC is from the United Kingdom. The increase in plays was because of so many factors like a video of the musical runs and harmonic sequence posted on Instagram and Youtube shorts. This made people react to the video and increase the streaming rate.

Limitations

The absence of long-term detailed data from Chartmetric to compare the whole 4 albums to know the evolution of the numbers. But had to make use of the basic numbers available.

There were no proper remixes to draw comparisons for other forms of data and further analysis.

Only data on radio airplay, Shazam, Spotify, and YouTube were used, but there are many other platforms where people listen to music.

Several external factors might have influenced whether people were listening to music or not on December 30th. For example, that period was Christmas time, so people were enjoying vacations and spending more time with their family and listening to songs nominated in the Grammys or someone did a cover on Instagram in an acoustic version.
