There are so many ChatGPT tutorials; I don’t know which one to trust.
Ever felt that heavy sigh escape your chest right after saying those words? You’re not alone. In fact, you’re standing right smack in the middle of a bustling crowd — countless curious souls, all eager to explore this shiny world of ChatGPT, yet completely overwhelmed by the tidal wave of content crashing over them.
Let’s be honest. The internet these days feels a bit like a flea market crammed into a tiny alleyway. Everywhere you turn, someone’s shouting, “Hey, over here! This is the best way to learn ChatGPT — trust me!” Meanwhile, your mind’s spinning, hands itching to close the browser tab, and your confidence quietly tiptoeing out the back door.
So, what’s really going on here?
The modern plague: too much of a good thing
It’s funny, isn’t it? Once upon a time, people struggled to find information. Now, we’re drowning in it. There are Twitter threads, LinkedIn posts, Medium articles, YouTube explainers, TikTok snippets, online courses — heck, even your neighbor’s cousin’s dog might have a tutorial out there.
Each promises the golden ticket: “Master ChatGPT in 24 hours,” “Prompting secrets they don’t want you to know,” “Become a prompt engineering wizard overnight.” They come draped in bold fonts and glittering thumbnails, practically begging for a click.
But beneath that confetti lies the same old question: who can you actually believe?
It’s a bit like asking for directions in a foreign city, only to have twenty strangers point in twenty different directions. At some point, your internal compass just gives up.
A very human story of confusion
Let me tell you about Liam. He’s a small business owner, runs a cozy online store selling handcrafted soaps. Always heard about ChatGPT — its magical powers to draft marketing emails, generate product descriptions, even whip up customer service responses in seconds. Seemed perfect for his one-man band.
So he dove in. Signed up for newsletters, joined Facebook groups, bookmarked about a hundred “definitive” guides.
A week later, his bookmarks looked like a tangled ball of yarn. Worse, he couldn’t figure out who actually knew what they were talking about. One guide insisted he must fine-tune with vector embeddings (huh?), another said that was overkill. One YouTuber raved about custom GPTs, another swore by building workflows in Python. All he wanted was a little help writing Instagram captions.
Eventually, Liam shut his laptop and sighed. “Forget it. I’ll just keep doing it myself.”
Sound painfully familiar?
Why so many voices drown out your own
There’s a reason this happens, and it’s not that you’re bad at learning. The truth is, most content is written for the widest audience possible. That means it’s generic by design, often contradicts itself, and rarely takes into account your particular goals. And then there’s the sneaky problem of quality: half these guides are churned out by people who learned ChatGPT five minutes before making their “expert” tutorial.
It’s a little like trying to build a treehouse by following instructions from twenty different people — some are architects, some watched a DIY video once, and some just like the sound of their own voice. No wonder your blueprint’s a mess.
So what do you do when you don’t know who to trust?
Slow down. Breathe. Then try this instead.
Ask yourself: What do I actually want from ChatGPT? Not what the internet says you should want. Just your own, real needs.
Do you want it to help you brainstorm? Write emails? Draft code snippets? Summarize research? The more precise your answer, the easier it is to filter out all the noise. If you’re looking to automate customer replies, why would you waste hours watching tutorials on building AI games?
Next, find two or three voices you resonate with. People who explain things in a way that clicks with you — whether that’s casual and story-driven, or dense and technical. Follow them closely, try their tips, and see if it actually solves your problem. Give yourself permission to ignore everyone else for now.
Also, experiment. You’ll learn more by tinkering inside ChatGPT for fifteen minutes than you will by watching someone else click buttons for an hour. Try messing around with prompts. Break things. Be a little reckless. You’ll be surprised how forgiving — and enlightening — it is.
A tiny exercise in perspective
Imagine, just for a moment, if the roles were reversed. What if you were the one giving ChatGPT a tutorial? How would you explain what you’re trying to do? What words would you use? This flips the script — suddenly, you’re clarifying your own goals. You’re not just gobbling up someone else’s wisdom. You’re defining your needs, your language, your path.
That little shift can be life-changing.
Moving from overload to ownership
See, the point isn’t to become a ChatGPT guru. It’s to become someone who knows how to bend it to their will, even imperfectly. It’s yours to shape, not the other way around.
Remember Liam? After shelving the tutorials, he opened up ChatGPT and typed:
“Hey, can you help me write three playful Instagram captions for my new lavender soap? Include a gentle call to action.”
The results? Spot on. He tweaked them a bit, posted them, and watched orders trickle in. Turns out he didn’t need a 20-hour masterclass. He just needed to start asking the right questions.
Where do you go from here?
Maybe you’re still tangled up in tabs. That’s okay. Maybe you’ll close this page and jump into yet another blog post promising “the only ChatGPT trick you’ll ever need.” That’s okay too. We’re all a little curious, a little hopeful that there’s a magic bullet.
But somewhere along the way, I hope you pause. Tilt your head, squint at your screen, and think, “Hang on, what do I actually want ChatGPT to do for me today?”
And then maybe, just maybe, you’ll start trusting the most important guide of all — yourself.
