The Blank Page Always Asks the Same Question

It is not really on or off for me. Not yet.
And maybe the day it becomes that simple, when the switch flips, and everything is stable and predictable, maybe it won’t even feel fulfilling anymore.
Because writing was never meant to be a switch.
Try explaining this to people sometime. Tell them you’re a writer. Watch their eyes glaze over politely while they nod as if they understand.
They don’t.
They imagine something simple. Maybe someone … ‘casually typing away’. Maybe someone … ‘jotting down ideas’.
But that’s not what writers do.
We are not counting notes.
We are creating worlds.
We are creating people who breathe, bleed, fall in love, betray each other, and fight demons both real and imagined. We give them flesh and blood, fears and ambitions. We make them suffer, we make them triumph, and sometimes we let them break.
We create stories that might inspire someone. Stories that might entertain someone. Stories that might even rot someone’s brain for a few hours of escapism.
But no matter what kind of story it is, it is never easy.
Writing is a brutally difficult job, especially when the world around you trivializes it.
“Anyone can write.”
“You just sit and type, right?”
“Must be nice to work from home.”
If only they knew.
To write, you have to peel yourself away from the daily machinery of life. The errands, the bills, the responsibilities, the emotional clutter that fills every hour of the day.
And then you sit.
At your desk.
In front of the only companion you have in that moment, your laptop.
And there it is.
The blank page.
It stares at you like an interrogator. Not kindly. Not gently.
Just one question.
Can you even do this?
Every single time you sit down to write, you have to answer that question.
Every single time.
So you start. The first golden words appear.
FADE IN.
Then the slugline.
Then the action line.
Then the character name.
Then the parenthetical.
Then the first line of dialogue.
And suddenly, something shifts. You realize you’ve stepped through the door. You’re no longer sitting at your desk. You’re inside the world. Your characters are speaking. The scene is moving. The story is breathing. You write. You rewrite. You chase the rhythm of the story. You disappear into that fragile, magical state writers call the zone.
Until reality interrupts.
The doorbell rings. The repair guys arrive. Someone calls your name. Life pulls you out of the world you were building with surgical precision.
And suddenly you’re back in the real one.
When you return to your desk, you stare at the last incomplete line.
If the strand of imagination is still there, you are lucky.
If not…
The blank page asks the same question again.
Can you even do this?
Recently, Farah Khan said something beautiful on a podcast.
“Work or no work, never cease the creative tuning.”
And that might be the most honest advice any creative person can hear, because opportunities don’t come every day.
Projects stall. Scripts get rejected. Meetings go nowhere.
But the tuning, the creative muscle, must never stop.
You keep writing. You keep creating worlds. You keep listening to the voices of characters who haven’t even been born yet.
So that when the opportunity finally arrives…When the blank page stares at you again and asks,
Can you even do this?
You can at least attempt to answer it.
With your words.
