The Dangerous Cost of Doing Things “Because We’ve Always Done It”

Imagine a tree.

Every tree has roots, a trunk, branches, and fruit.

The roots represent tradition, culture, inherited wisdom, and the knowledge passed down through generations. The trunk represents the systems built upon those roots. The branches represent how that wisdom expresses itself in everyday life. The fruit represents the results we experience.

Most traditions began for a reason. They emerged from observation, experience, and the realities of the time. The roots were not random. They developed because they helped people survive, thrive, and create order in a particular environment.

But a tree does not grow because of its roots alone.

A tree also grows because of the environment surrounding it.

The same tree planted in a vast forest will grow differently from a tree surrounded by concrete buildings. The quality of air changes. The amount of sunlight changes. The availability of water changes. The ecosystem changes.

When the environment changes, the tree must adapt.

This is the essence of the ancient principle of Desh-Kaal-Patra.

Desh refers to place.

Kaal refers to time.

Patra refers to the person or context receiving the wisdom.

A teaching that worked in one place may require modification in another.

A practice that served society hundreds of years ago may need reinterpretation today. The purpose is not to reject the roots. The purpose is to understand what the roots were trying to achieve.

Consider a grandfather who grew up during a time of scarcity. Every rupee mattered. Security mattered. Survival mattered. He worked tirelessly, saved relentlessly, avoided risks, and taught his children that stability was the highest virtue. His discipline helped the family build wealth, buy a home, educate the next generation, and create opportunities that did not exist before.

Those values became part of the family’s roots.

Decades later, his granddaughter finds herself living in a completely different world. She has access to education, technology, global opportunities, and career paths her grandfather could never have imagined. Yet every time she considers starting a business, changing careers, speaking publicly, or pursuing something meaningful, she hears the inherited message:

“Stay safe. Don’t take risks. Don’t leave what is secure.”

The grandfather’s wisdom was never the problem.

The environment changed.

What once protected the family may now be limiting its expansion.

At that point, the question is no longer whether the original wisdom was valuable. The question is whether the current environment still requires the exact same response.

When systems become hyper-fixated on preserving the form of what once worked, they often lose connection with the intelligence that created it. A tree that refuses to grow new branches eventually struggles to reach new sunlight. A tree that directs all its energy toward preserving old branches may stop producing new fruit.

This is how families stagnate.

This is how organizations become irrelevant.

This is how cultures lose vitality.

Forward movement does not come from rejecting the past. It comes from understanding the purpose of the past and allowing that purpose to evolve with changing circumstances.

A living system grows.

A frozen system repeats.

The deepest respect we can show tradition is not blind obedience. It is understanding it deeply enough to keep it alive.
