Karkinos the crab was sent by Hera, sworn enemy of Heracles to annoy, distract, and stop him by pinching his leg. Heracles crushed the crab under his foot.

Karkinos was made the constellation of the Crab by Hera for his devotion to family.

Cancer is considered by classic astrologers to be the symbol of the entrance to this world. Capricorn is said to be the symbol denoting the entrance to the next world.

The next 28 days you might consider what and who nourishes you and passing on that nourishment to others.

The constellation of Cancer is hard to see, as if a veil surrounds its stars. The origin of body, mind, soul, and family might be difficult to observe as these involve often slow and cumulative processes. For instance, we are not the origin of the light that comes to our eyes. That light comes from stars consuming and sacrificing themselves, as do the elements of earth, sky, and body originate from the same source.

When we are fortunate enough to live a long life, we are reminded that life is a long lesson in self care. And as the buddhists say, pain is inevitable, while suffering is an option.

This new moon reveals the Apex of summer in the northern hemisphere and the first day of winter south of the equator.

The new moon occurs one or two days before we see her waxing ‘horns of consecration’. These horns pick up 10,000 signals every waking moment from the visible and the invisible world, intuition, instinct, and possibly access to knowledge. Along with the sign of horned Mercury astrology reveals in these ‘horns’ that we are receivers and transmitters of more than logic, rationality, and consciousness. Heart beats, music plays, and we separate and join the dancer and the dance.

In Homer’s Odyssey — Odysseus visits Achilles in the underworld. Achilles deeply regrets being a hero/killer and murderer, and telling Odysseus -in no uncertain terms- that he should have been a farmer or even the slave of a farmer, providing nourishment.

In the new testament we meet Joseph the nurturing male, providing for his family in long patience. During this new moon it’s beneficial, I feel, to meditate on how we grow boys to men.
