The U.S. May Be Number 1 Again

The news that matters isn’t reported by mainstream media in the U.S. of Americans. Since 2002 the U.S. has fallen from being number 17th in the world in terms of freedom of the press (press freedom is sometimes used to share information apart from the mis/dis/mal-information) to 64th place (#1 in going down perhaps faster than any other country — a guess I haven’t verified). Social media remains what it always has been since tavern talk — not a source of information other than about the buzz, the tell me what’s a-happening thing.

If I moved to Eritrea (ERI above, with no official language at the national level) and ignored the press and social media (as I do in the U.S.), but had access to a library or the internet, how would my freedom to know rather than believe be affected?

In Eritrea I wouldn’t be distracted by local prattle in languages I can’t understand. Maybe I should move there. Or a cabin in Montana within walking distance of a town with a library wouldn’t be so bad, considering its library would be better than a prison library. But where I’m imprisoned now isn’t so bad, considering.

Should I learn Norwegian (easier than Icelandic but harder than Irish) and subscribe to Norwegian press offerings where the press is almost perfectly free to spread what?

If you presuppose “the truth,” wrong again. Modern humans can spread modern human prattle. The technology, post Gutenberg, has changed. Now using AI, the what has changed is the rate of spreading mis/dis/mal-information.

“A lie can travel halfway around the world while the truth is putting on its shoes.”

— A quote widely misattributed to Mark Twain to add to the misinformation. Today a lie can travel 1,543 times around the world while the truth….
