Shudder Spotlight: ‘1000 Women in Horror’ (2026) — Nightmare Power

Horror historian Alexandra Heller-Nicholas leads a mini-deep dive into feminine exploitation, agency and passion within the genre.

An updated cinematic companion to Alexandra Heller-Nicholas’s **book of the same name*, 1000 Women in Horror* covers female representation and connection with the genre in perspectives both academic and personal. Heller-Nicholas herself leads the charge nicely, framing an array of interviews with critics, writers, directors and actors discussing what horror means to them and broader feminine experience and culture.

From girlhood, creepy dollified innocence and coming of age, to teenagedom, menstruation, sex, bonding, bullying and societal panic, to adult life, work, pregnancy, motherhood, confinement, expectations, harassment and danger, to aging, prejudice, neglect, witchified fear and hagsploitation freedom, a bit of all is covered at rapid yet revealing pace. Do wish this could’ve been an extended series, or mammoth first dive à la In Search of Darkness. The analysis and stories are nonetheless grand though.

Kate Siegel’s beat by beat graphic description of a C-section is enough to give us doofy dudes a whole new appreciation for birthing horror. The parallels drawn consistently by Heller-Nicholas and director Donna Davies between real life and screen life, with horror serving as a force of catharsis acknowledging darker aspects of womanhood, are beyond effective — and really moving for our collective mutant family; diehards of bloody fables to the end.

Long live women in horror: on both sides of the lens and in geekdom. Any guy who says otherwise is just defending a tiny chainsaw.

Side note — Just like Akela Cooper, I too had a My Buddy doll right around the dawn of Chucky. Late-80s/early-90s dad sensitivity in a nutshell. Also, I was sad that Anna Biller didn’t get an interview or shout-out.
