Seven years of Tizen isn’t charity, it’s strategy
Why Samsung’s move to longer TV support is more about platform control than consumer love.
Seven years of Tizen isn’t charity, it’s strategy

Alright, let’s get this straight. Samsung is promising Tizen OS updates for seven years for its new 2024 TVs. Seven years! It’s being presented as some grand gesture of consumer love, but let’s be real: this isn’t Samsung suddenly finding religion on software support. This is Samsung reacting to pressure.
The pressure comes from everywhere. It comes from LG, which already committed to longer webOS updates, making Samsung look bad. It comes from years (literal years) of people like me complaining about incredibly expensive smart TVs becoming frustratingly dumb after just two or three years because the software was abandoned. And it comes from the baseline expectation set by phones. If your $1000 phone gets five or seven years of updates, why on earth shouldn’t your TV costing thousands of dollars?
So yes, Samsung is now promising seven years of Tizen OS upgrades and security patches for its higher end 2024–2025 lineup (think Neo QLEDs and OLEDs, probably not the entry level stuff) and even some 2023 models. This is objectively better. The old situation was indefensible. But the interesting question isn’t if it’s better, it’s why now and what does it actually mean for the platform war happening in your living room?
This is fundamentally about platform control. Samsung needs you to keep using Tizen. Tizen is how they deliver ads, how they promote their own services (like Samsung TV Plus), and how they gather data. A TV that stops getting updates might lead users to plug in a Roku or Apple TV, pushing Samsung out of the picture. Updates for seven years keep users sticky, keep them inside Samsung’s walled garden for longer. It aligns a much needed consumer benefit with Samsung’s own strategic goals. See how that works?
Now, what about the updates themselves? Tizen OS updates, sure. Security patches, table stakes. But the real weak point has always been app support. The argument goes that many big apps now, like YouTube and Netflix, are basically just fancy HTML5 web applications running in Tizen’s browser. That should make them more resilient to OS changes, right?
Well, maybe. It only works if Samsung commits to meaningfully updating the underlying web rendering engine within Tizen for those full seven years, keeping pace with evolving web standards. Are they just patching Tizen itself, or are they keeping that crucial browser core truly modern? Because if they don’t, developers will eventually code their web apps for newer standards, and those apps will break on your “supported” TV anyway.
And let’s not forget hardware. Will the TV’s processor from 2024 actually run complex web apps smoothly in 2030? History suggests that’s optimistic. Performance degradation over time is real.
So the questions I have aren’t just “Which specific 2023 models get this?” (which they still haven’t clearly defined). The real questions are: How significant will these updates be in year six or seven? Is the commitment to the browser engine’s feature set as strong as the OS version number? What happens if Tizen itself is strategically deemphasized or replaced by Samsung before this seven year period is up? Remember Google TV / Android TV exists, and platform strategies can shift.
Look, updates for seven years is better than three. Samsung finally catching up to basic expectations is good. But don’t pop the champagne just yet. This is the new minimum requirement for playing the smart TV game, forced by competition and user demands. It’s a necessary move for Samsung to protect its Tizen platform. The real test isn’t this announcement; it’s the actual updates delivered (especially for that browser engine) years from now. Let’s see if they follow through.
