I first crossed paths with Joachim Trier’s cinema through the Oslo films. I was in my early twenties then; now, I find myself edging toward the end of them. Growing up alongside a director’s filmography changes how you absorb their work, and sitting with Sentimental Value on a quiet Berlin night, that passage of time felt heavier than ever. It is, without a doubt, one of the finest films I have seen in a long time — and it holds what is easily the greatest final sequence of the last decade.

Trier’s camera doesn’t force its way into the family’s center; instead, it watches from doorways. We are kept at a physical and emotional distance, positioned not as insiders but as guests — eavesdroppers catching fragments of a fractured dynamic. I loved how the narrative is withheld, how the past isn’t handed to us in neat exposition but bleeds out slowly, piece by piece.
