Standing Water, Standing Problems: The Hidden Crisis of Urban Waterlogging

When drainage fails, everything around it begins to rot — the walls, the ground, and eventually, the community’s faith that anyone is coming to fix it.

There is a particular kind of despair that comes from chronic waterlogging. It is not the dramatic despair of a flood — the kind that makes the news, triggers emergency responses, and draws cameras. It is quieter than that. It is the despair of waking up every morning to the same puddle that was there yesterday, and the day before, and the week before that. Of watching green algae slowly conquer the base of your wall. Of knowing that the rusted pipe running along the corner has been leaking for so long it has become part of the scenery.

The images that sparked this reflection show exactly that kind of scene. A sunken outdoor area with standing water pooling dark and still around a waterlogged drain cover. Walls stripped of paint down to bare, damp concrete. Moss growing thick and green where water has made its permanent home. Pipes corroding in plain sight. It looks like a corner of the city that time — and the municipality — forgot.

Waterlogging of this nature is far more than an eyesore. It is a genuine public health emergency in slow motion.

Standing water is the preferred breeding ground of the Aedes aegypti mosquito — the vector responsible for dengue fever, chikungunya, and other vector-borne diseases that continue to devastate communities across South Asia and beyond. When drainage systems fail and water has nowhere to go, it becomes a nursery for disease. The people living closest to these stagnant pools — typically those in lower-income urban areas with the least political leverage — pay the highest price.

Beyond disease, chronic moisture destroys structures. Walls absorb water, concrete cracks, paint peels, and foundations weaken. What begins as a drainage problem becomes a structural one. A structural problem becomes a housing crisis. A housing crisis becomes a human one. The chain of consequence is long, but it starts with something as simple as a drain that nobody cleared.

What makes this particularly infuriating is that waterlogging is, in most cases, a preventable problem. Functional drainage infrastructure, regular maintenance schedules, and timely municipal response are not radical asks. They are the baseline of urban governance. Yet in neighborhood after neighborhood — particularly those that are lower-income, older, or politically underserved — these basics are consistently absent.

There is also the psychological toll that rarely gets discussed. Living in a space that is perpetually damp, visually deteriorating, and associated with disease creates a low-grade but persistent stress. It affects how people feel about their homes, their neighborhoods, and their futures. It communicates, loudly and without words, that the people who live here are not a priority.

As citizens, we need to move beyond accepting this as simply “how things are.” Poor drainage is not a natural condition. It is the result of decisions — or the failure to make them. Decisions about where maintenance budgets go. Decisions about which neighborhoods get attention before the monsoon season and which ones get visited only after someone files a complaint or a story goes viral.

The standing water in that corner will not drain itself. But our silence on these issues will keep it standing indefinitely.
