Original Bengali Aphorisms with English Translations

Part 01

Preface

Across the vast landscape of world literature, it is often only a few sentences that remain etched in our memory. William Shakespeare’s “To be, or not to be: that is the question.”, John Keats’s “Beauty is truth, truth beauty.”, Rabindranath Tagore’s “To lose faith in humanity is a sin.”, and Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay’s “Traveller, have you lost your way?” have all transcended the boundaries of their original works to become part of humanity’s collective consciousness. At times, a single sentence comes to represent an entire literary masterpiece.

The aphorisms in this collection are a concise expression of my long-held reflections, observations, lived experiences, and overall philosophy of life. As a humble attempt to share these thoughts with you, each aphorism is presented first in its original Bengali, followed by its English translation, so that readers from different linguistic backgrounds may connect with the same ideas.

If even one of these aphorisms speaks to you or inspires you to look within yourself, I shall consider this endeavor worthwhile.

Art | শিল্প

Original (Bengali)

“শিল্প কেবল মেধা, কৌশল বা নৈপুণ্য নয় — শিল্প হলো মানুষ, সময় ও সত্যের প্রতি দায়বদ্ধতা।”

English Translation

Art is not merely intellect, technique, or craftsmanship; it is a commitment to humanity, time, and truth.

The Journey to Greatness | মহত্ত্বের যাত্রা

Original (Bengali)

“অসাধারণ হতে হলে আগে সাধারণ হতে হয়।”

English Translation

To become extraordinary, one must first be ordinary.

Greatness | মহত্ত্ব

Original (Bengali)

“মেধা থাকলে কবি বা সাহিত্যিক হওয়া যায়; হৃদয় না থাকলে তলস্তয় বা রবীন্দ্রনাথ হওয়া যায় না।”

English Translation

Talent may make one a poet or a writer, but only a great heart can make one a Tolstoy or a Tagore.

Nature | প্রকৃতি

Original (Bengali)

“মস্তবড় শিক্ষকও প্রকৃতির এক ক্ষুদ্র ছাত্র মাত্র।”

English Translation

Even the greatest teacher is but a humble student of Nature.

Love | প্রেম

Original (Bengali)

“প্রেম এক এন্টিভেনম — অনুভূতির এক দুরন্ত অসুখ।”

English Translation

Love is an antivenom — a wild affliction of the heart.

Love | ভালোবাসা

Original (Bengali)

“দূরত্ব দূরত্ব সৃষ্টি করে, ভালোবাসা সৃষ্টি করে ভালোবাসা।”

English Translation

Distance creates distance; love creates more love.

Mother | মা

Original (Bengali)

“এক আকাশ বেদনা-মথিত ক্রন্দনের নাম মা!”

English Translation

Mother is a sky filled with grief-churned cries, and a sky of boundless peace.

Humanity | মানবতা

Original (Bengali)

“মানুষ কতটা অমানুষ হলে মানবতা পরাজিত হয়?”

English Translation

How inhuman must we become before humanity itself is defeated?

“আমি চিঠি লিখি, আমার কাছে ফিরে আসে সে পাহাড়, সাগর, আকাশ পেরিয়ে।”

English Translation

I write letters that return to me after crossing mountains, oceans, and skies.

Solitude | নির্জনতা

Original (Bengali)

“নির্জনে বসে কোলাহল দেখি, কোলাহলেই বসে নির্জনতায় ডুবি।”

English Translation

In solitude I watch the noise of the world; amid the noise, I sink into solitude.
