The developers who survive the AI era won’t be the ones who write the most code-they’ll be the ones who create the most value.
golden age of vibe coding is coming to an end.
Many people misunderstood the point.
They thought I was saying AI coding is dead.
I’m not.
I’m saying building products without understanding users is dead.
Those are two very different things.
The problem was never Claude, GPT, Cursor, or whatever shiny tool appears next month.
The problem was believing that generating code equals creating value.
It doesn’t.
Never has.
AI Didn’t Kill Software
It exposed something.
For years people believed developers were valuable because they could write code.
Then AI started writing code.
Suddenly everyone asked,
“If AI can build apps, why do we still need developers?”
Because code was never the difficult part.
The difficult part has always been…
Knowing what to build.
Knowing why people care.
Knowing when simplicity beats features.
Knowing which problems deserve solving.
AI doesn’t know that.
You do.
We Mistook Speed for Progress
Today someone can build in one weekend what used to take a month.
Amazing.
But ask yourself…
How many abandoned SaaS products now exist because building became too easy?
Thousands.
Maybe millions.
We aren’t creating better software.
We’re creating more software.
There’s a difference.
The Real Bottleneck Hasn’t Changed
People love saying,
AI removed the barrier to coding.
Sure.
But here’s the uncomfortable truth.
Coding wasn’t the biggest barrier.
Finding customers still is.
Keeping customers still is.
Earning trust still is.
Solving painful problems still is.
AI removed one obstacle while leaving the mountain untouched.
Everyone Has a Hammer
Imagine giving every person on Earth a professional camera.
Would everyone become a world-famous photographer?
Of course not.
The camera wasn’t the missing ingredient.
Taste was.
Creativity was.
Experience was.
The same thing happened with software.
Everyone suddenly received a powerful coding machine.
The market didn’t become better.
It became noisier.
AI Rewards Builders, Not Dreamers
The biggest winners I know aren’t asking AI to build “the next billion-dollar startup.”
They’re asking things like:
“Can you automate this annoying report?”
“Can you save me two hours every week?”
“Can you clean this ugly code?”
Small wins.
Real problems.
Actual users.
Ironically…
Those boring projects often become successful businesses.
Your Competitive Advantage Isn’t Coding
Five years ago it might have been.
Today?
Not even close.
Your advantage is your experience.
Your industry knowledge.
Your network.
Your reputation.
Your ability to notice problems other people ignore.
AI can’t copy any of those.
The Future Belongs to Hybrid Builders
The best developers won’t reject AI.
They also won’t blindly trust it.
They’ll use it like a power tool.
Fast where speed matters.
Careful where judgment matters.
The companies hiring tomorrow won’t ask,
“Can you write Java?”
They’ll ask,
“Can you solve problems faster than everyone else?”
Those aren’t the same question anymore.
The New Skill Nobody Talks About
Prompt engineering isn’t the future.
Neither is vibe coding.
The real skill is decision making.
Knowing when AI is right.
Knowing when it’s wrong.
Knowing when to throw away 500 generated lines because a 20-line solution is cleaner.
That judgment can’t be prompted.
It has to be learned.
Final Thoughts
Vibe coding didn’t fail because AI is bad.
It failed because too many people confused activity with achievement.
Writing software has become cheaper.
Attention hasn’t.
Trust hasn’t.
Great ideas haven’t.
If AI writes 90% of your code tomorrow…
Congratulations.
You still have to solve the other 90% of building a successful product.
And that’s exactly where the opportunity begins.
