Let’s start with the basics. An IAM role is kind of like a guest pass in AWS. It lets someone (or something — like an EC2 instance) access specific AWS services without needing permanent credentials like access keys or secret keys.

Unlike IAM users, who carry around permanent keys (like a full-time employee badge), IAM roles hand out temporary access, just long enough to get the job done.

So instead of worrying about lost keys or outdated permissions, IAM roles keep your AWS house safe — and smart.

👤 IAM Roles vs. IAM Users: What’s the Difference?

Let’s break it down:

Think of IAM users as full-time employees with building access. IAM roles? They’re like contractors who only enter specific rooms for a few hours.

🛠️ Real-Life Magic: IAM Roles + EC2

Here’s a common use case that comes up in job interviews and real-world AWS projects: giving an EC2 instance access to an S3 bucket — securely.

No keys, no manual configuration. Just smooth, role-based access.

Step-by-step:

  1. Create an IAM Role Choose EC2 as the trusted service that can assume the role.

2. Attach a Policy Want to give access to just one S3 bucket? Use the AWS Policy Generator and create a policy like:

arn:aws:s3:::Bucketname/*

This grants full access to only that bucket, not every bucket in your AWS account. Huge security win.

3. Attach the Role to Your EC2 Instance You do this from the EC2 console during launch, or even afterward.

4. Test It Out Log in to your EC2 instance. Try copying a file to the authorized S3 bucket — it works! Try copying it to an unauthorized one? You’ll get a friendly slap from AWS: “Permission denied.” That’s your role doing its job.

“You will attach the role directly to the instance, and in the backend, it will take some temporary keys — not the permanent keys.”

I created two buckets, both are empty

Now navigate to IAM

Create a role

For now, do not attach any policies or permissions

Now navigate to Add permissions → Create Inline policy

Click on JSON

Now open “AWS Policy Generator” in a new tab

In the Resource ARN, place give the S3 bucket ARN(Amazon Resource Name)

Now, let us connect to the EC2 Instance that we created earlier

created a file uisng touch command

Make sure to install AWS CLI

Now let us attach the role to the Instance

Now I was able to upload the file to the S3 Bucket

I tried uploading the same file to another bucket, but access was denied, because in the policy, we mentioned the ARN of the one bucket.

In a world full of data breaches and leaked credentials, temporary, tightly scoped access isn’t just a best practice — it’s essential.

IAM roles help us follow the principle of least privilege, automate access control, and sleep better at night knowing our AWS environment isn’t handing out permanent keys like candy.
