Part 3: What Is a Commercial Receivable?

Before we go further in this series, let us start with the basics.

What is a commercial receivable?

It is money a business is owed by its customers that the business has not yet collected.

Every business that sells goods or services on terms has commercial receivables. A contractor who completes a job and invoices the client. A distributor who ships product and waits 30 days to get paid. A service business that bills monthly. All of them have commercial receivables sitting on their books right now.

The receivable exists the moment the business earns it. The customer owes it. The business just has not collected it yet.

That is the asset. That is where we start.

Follow along for Part 4 where we explain what a purchased future receivable is and how it works.
