Deep Study Shapes our Estimation of Jesus

You study the Scriptures diligently because you think that in them you have eternal life. These are the very Scriptures that testify about me [John 5:39 NIV]

Knowledge about a thing or person is key to placing the right value on the said thing or person. When we don’t have enough details about something, chances are that we are not going to treat it as what it is really worth. Our estimation of who Jesus is, is directly linked to how much we know Him. In essence, the more we know Him, the more we treat Him with great consideration and respect, regard Him highly, treat Him with deference and courtesy, treat Him as valuable and precious, and esteem Him of the highest degree with great dignity.

Jesus and the Word of God are inseparable. He is the embodiment of the Word. We cannot know Him outside the Word. John 1:1, 14 tells us that “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth”. Studying the Word must bring us to a place where we encounter Jesus. When we encounter Jesus, we are able to have the right estimation of who He truly is. We see Him as the bread of life, light, door, good shepherd, resurrection and life, way, truth and life, true vine, lamb of God, and many others the more we draw close to Him through study.

The verb study in our focal text is from the word “eraunao”, which implies keen scrutiny and tracking down the message of the Scriptures. It is easy to study scripture just to find arguments to support your own positions about life. But accurately and sincerely searching through scripture ultimately brings us to a place of being illuminated about the person of Jesus leading us to revere and honour Him. The “price tag” we place on Jesus is as a result of the depth of our revelation of Him resulting from our study of scripture.

As believers, if we are too busy to search the scriptures, then we are just too busy. The life of a Christian must be marked by constant Bible study. We need to stay curious about the contents of scripture.

Today, I want to encourage you to choose a topic, a character, a book, an event, or any other theme in the Word and study it more deeply. As you do, open your heart to experience Jesus in a personal way. That experience will lead you to know Him more intimately, and as your knowledge of Him grows, it will move you to honour Him daily.

Prayer: Thank You Father for giving us the Word. Give us the desire and passion to study it so that we can encounter Christ and honour Him as is due Him. In Jesus’ name! Amen.
