Deliberate Black and White Panel

One panel changes everything

This week’s theme is all about contrast! Instead of centering on a particular genre or setting, we challenged our creators to tell any story they wanted — with one catch: every comic had to be in full color except for one panel, which had to be presented entirely in black and white. It’s a simple restriction that led to a wide variety of inventive storytelling techniques. Keep an eye out for that black-and-white panel and see how each team used it to make their story just a little more memorable.

Christian De Matteo is the co-founder and Editor-in-Chief of Fugitive Poems, where he writes comics that wander the back alleys of horror, noir, science fiction, and fantasy looking for a fight. His work includes River, Blood Valkyrie in Vegas, and stories featured in the Containment Breach anthology series, while he also produces the magazine Dirty Living. Outside of comics, his fiction has appeared in The Bleeding Margin Magazine, Horrorsmith Magazine, and multiple anthologies, and his work was shortlisted for the Uncharted Magazine Noir Prize. He firmly believes every story can be improved by asking, “What if this got weirder?”

Wereangel chooses to remain silent. Rumor has it, however, that they are an award winning author of children’s novels (as well as poetry for adults) under a secret identity about which we know nothing.

Tom Lynott lives in Arizona with his adorable wife, two boys and a Border Collie / Cattle Dog mutt named Dani. He took part in Comics Experience’s Introduction to Lettering Comics class in May 2021. Eliushi makes comics about hidden monsters, lost magic, and sad robots. They are a part of the SpiderForest Webcomic Collective where they work on KEYSPACE: A Winged Tale, a YA science fantasy story about kids with wings for hair.

Jason Martinez is a songwriter for Bottom of the Food Chain (think Sublime meets punk) and a script writer blending surreal energy with Twilight Zone twists. He is currently seeking collaborators for my his Sci-Fi Dark Fantasy project, called KOSU.
