Finding inspiration from an in-house cyclotron

This morning we are visiting DECY-13 in BRIN, Babarsari, Yogyakarta. Leader of the visiting team if Prof. Rizal Kurniadi.

The acronym

Development of Experimental Cyclotron in Yogyakarta — 13 MeV (DECY-13) is an Indonesian 13 MeV proton cyclotron developed by BRIN’s accelerator center (formerly BATAN) to build local capability and produce PET radioisotopes (Silakhuddin & Kudus, 2022).

Perseverance

The DECY-13 project began in 2013 and has continued to progress despite limited funding and a shortage of specialized human resources. Developing a cyclotron is never a simple task: it demands the precise design and operation of a strong magnet system, reliable radio-frequency (RF) cavities for accelerating particles, and ultra-high vacuum conditions to keep the beam stable. On top of that come challenges in ion sources, extraction systems, cooling, and beam diagnostics. Even with these demanding technical requirements, the team has steadily pushed forward for more than a decade.

Dr. Emy Mulyani (left) and Dr. Taufik (right) share insights on DECY-13 and the use of its beam line.

A sharing session delivered by Dr. Emy Mulyani and Dr. Taufik gives insight on the DECY-13. Their persistence under such constraints reflects a remarkable perseverance, keeping alive the vision of Indonesia’s in-house cyclotron.
