Manila co-working spaces keeping up late-night hustlers

Seemingly, the Philippines has become one economic crisis away from falling behind, and when that happens, the workforce and education sectors are always the first to feel the weight of the struggle.

Aside from overcoming literacy gaps, schools remain vulnerable in sudden adjustments due to problems that are solvable. Inadequate facilities, limited teaching materials, shortage of educators, and curriculum mismatch among other factors reduces the conduciveness of the school for learning.

Due to this, shifting from traditional to hybrid or remote learning set-up became the new normal, or the band-aid solution. Although not favored by all, this shift is being seen as necessary for the learners themselves, as external conditions remain uncertain, may it be manmade or natural.

And this is no different from the working sector. In 2023, many companies have also started migrating their physical workspaces to digital platforms. Employers saw how renting and other fees associated with their workspaces adjusted for good. Even though employees displayed no difference in terms of their ability to deliver and comply with their work needs, they still experience existing hindrances in performing such as limited working equipment and workspaces at home.

What pushes them more towards the door?

As both landscapes adapt, many are still struggling to cope, as not everyone has the means to conform easily and bring productivity up to one hundred percent as they used to.

Not everyone has a space for them to focus, to produce outputs effectively, and to gain the feeling of belongingness even at a certain time of being alone to work.

At this point in their lives, it is an unending cycle of trying their best to remain motivated, productive, and proactive amidst changes of environment and with the uncertainties surrounding us.

What makes them take a seat in this alternative environment?

The rise of co-working spaces has been a helpful alternative space for many, wherein focus and efficiency are supported rather than disturbed.

Back then, co-working spaces were often perceived as a last option, a place to settle when no other places were available or perhaps an aesthetic backdrop for getting work done.

But in this economy? People no longer go to co-working spaces out of choice or a hobby. The circumstances are pushing them to it, gluing them to comfort and productivity in the guise of paid seats, desks, and benefits.

While others prefer to go solo, there are still individuals who like to invite their people and together they work, alone.

But within these available spaces, there are still factors to consider as they choose a place to pay for the comfort and productivity of their own space once their default becomes too unfavorable.

Good reputation, free and fast internet, free water, snacks, and coffee at the pantry, various desk types, discounted rates — whether you’re a first-timer, a seasonal goer, or already a space member, you’ve probably checked one or two among these before going in.

A walking distance from universities such as Centro Escolar University, San Sebastian College-Recoletos, and National Teachers College, this space is close to students and highly accessible from any mode of transportation traversing Recto, as well as convenience stores for quick breaks.

What remains after the stay?

Intention and means go way deeper as people realize that having the privilege to escape–to seek a change of scenery when things aren’t working out–is both a good and a sad reality. Whether in the guise of a new desk or another place entirely, this need for a shift in environment is a reality most people now share.

What used to be an alternative working zone is now being seen as a necessary refuge. While any space providing peace, belongingness, and productivity can become your own, it is a blessing that dedicated co-working spaces exist. This kind welcomes people at any time of the day, especially at night, offering amenities and benefits that go way beyond their material form.

To each their own, as they say. A co-working space may or may not work for everyone, but it is enough that people find ways to cope and continue to function, even when they feel like they are pushed to the doors of challenges and uncertainties.
