Grammer for Kids-Subject & Predicate

At age of 5 to 7 years old, children are moving from speaking in phrases to forming clear, complete sentences. Here’s a practical, fun and parent-friendly guide on how to teach them Grammer.

Subject

Who or What the Sentence Is About. A group of words that expresses a complete thought and has a subject and a verb.

The subject tells who or what is doing the action. It’s usually a person, place, or thing.

Examples:

  • The cat is sleeping.
  • Riya is dancing.
  • My dog runs fast.

👉 Here, The cat, Riya, and My dog are subjects — they are the ones the sentence is talking about.

Position of the Subject — The subject is usually found at the beginning of the sentence, but it can also appear in other positions.

Predicate

What the Subject Is Doing. The predicate tells what the subject does or what is happening. It usually starts with a verb (action word).

Examples:

  • The cat is sleeping.
  • Riya is dancing.
  • My dog runs fast.

👉 Here, is sleeping, is dancing, and runs fast are predicates — they tell what the subject is doing.

You can say:

“The subject is the doer. The predicate tells what the doer is doing.”

Sentence: The dog is barking. Subject: The dog (Who is the sentence about?) Predicate: is barking (What is the dog doing?)

Little Practice Game:

Ask your child: “I’ll say a subject, and you finish the sentence!”

  • The bird… (flies high)
  • My mom… (is cooking dinner)
  • The car… (is very fast)

Then switch roles — let your child say a subject, and you complete it!
