Surya Dev: The Mythological Secrets of the Sun God

Sun — Surya Dev

Sun — Surya Dev

Introduction:

The Sun has always been more than just a celestial body in Indian mythology. In Vedic scriptures and Puranic stories, Surya Dev- the Sun God — is regarded as the soul of the universe, the provider of life, light, and energy. While most people know Surya Dev as the source of light and as the deity worshipped during festivals like Makar Sankranti and Chhath puja, there are many hidden mythological aspects of his story that remain unknown. In this article, we will uncover the lesser-known concepts of Surya Dev, his role in astrology, and his spiritual importance in Hindu mythology.

Surya Dev in Vedic and Puranic Literature :

In the Rigveda, Surya is described as the “eye of the Gods” and the witness of all actions. He is called Savita, Aditya, Divakar, and Dinakar, each representing different aspects of the cosmic Sun. Surya Dev is one of the twelve Adityas, sons of Sage Kashyap and Aditi, who together symbolize cosmic principles.

In Puranas, Surya is not just a god of light but also a deity who governs time, health, and truth. He rides a golden chariot drawn by seven horses — representing the seven days of the week, the seven colors of light, and the seven chakras of human existence.

The Family of Surya Dev: Unknown Aspects

Most people are familiar with Surya Dev, but not many know about his family. Surya Dev’s consort was Sangya, the daughter of Viswakarma. Unable to withstand the intense heat of Surya, Sangya created her own shadow- form Chhaya, who took her place. From Sangya and Surya were born Vaivasvata Manu( the progenitor of mankind), Yamuna, and Yama( the god of death). From Chhaya were born Shani Dev(Saturn) and Tapti.

The family connection is fascinating- the Sun, the giver of life, is also the father of Yama( god of death) and Shani(justice and discipline). It shows the balance of creation: where there is light, there is shadow; where there is life, there is death.

Surya Dev in Astrology:

In Vedic astrology(Jyotish Shastra), Surya represents the soul(Atma), authority, ego, health, and fatherly energy. He governs the zodiac sign and monn sign Leo(Simha Rashi) and controls Sunday. When the Sun is strong in a person’s horoscope, it gives leadership, power, confidence, and vitality. However, when weak, it can cause health issues, lack of confidence, a strained relations with authority.

Lesser-known is the fact that Surya Dev is considered the “king” among the nine Navagrahas(planets). Every planetory energy, whether benefic or malefic, ultimately depends on the Sun’s grace because he provides the very energy that sustains them.

Surya Dev and worship practices:

The worship of Surya Dev is an ancient tradition. In the Vedic period, Surya Namaskar(salutations to the sun) was a physical and spiritual exercise. Even today, Chhath Puja is dedicated to Surya Dev, where devotees thank him for sustaining life on earth.

What many don’t know is that Surya Dev is also associated with health and healing. The practice of offering Arghya(water) to the rising Sun is believed to balance energies in the body, improve eyesight, and remove negative vibrations.
