Once there was a Brahmin named Ajamila who was living in Kanyankubja (Now it’s called Uttar Pradesh). Ajamila was a great scholar of scriptures. He was a celibate, humble, self-controlled, humble, truthful and pure-hearted man. He served his guru, guests and elders with sincerity. He always wished good for others and never sought faults in others virtues.

One day, as he was returning from the forest with fruits, flowers and kusha grass as per his father’s orders, he saw an immoral to, shameless man intoxicated with liquor indulging with a prostitute on the way. The women also drunk and half-naked, laughed, sang and made playful gestures to entice the man.

After seeing those scene Ajamila who had been a pure and virtuous man then suddenly captivated by the sight. He tried hard to stop his mind with the power of his knowledge and patience but he couldn’t withstand the force of his desires. He got very much attracted to that prostitute that he completely lost his mind with lust. He started bringing her clothes, jewellery and many gifts to please her. Then slowly he left his noble and wedded wife. He began living with the prostitute. Ajamila desires grew so strong that he started amassing wealth without caring for right or wrong. He did many sinful activities like theft, deceit, and fraud to obtain money which he gave to that prostitute to impress her.

Ajamila continued his life by indulging and doing sinful activities. Until 88 years he cared for the prostitute and her 10 children. He names his last son as “Narayan”. Ajamila adored his youngest son Narayan and also attached to Narayan that he spent all his time watching him play and listening to his babbling. Ajamila fed him, gave him everything he wants. Ajamila forgot that his death was approaching.

As his final moments arrived, he saw three Yamadutas(messengers of Yamaraj) before him. Ajamila got feared and called his son Narayan, Narayan by crying.

Vishnudutas (Lord Vishnu’s messengers) heard him chanting their master’s name at the time of death. Immediately, they rushed to the scene. By then, the Yamadutas had begun pulling Ajamila’s subtle body from his gross body. The Vishnudutas forcefully stopped them.

The Yamadutas, stopped by the Vishnudutas, questioned them- "Who are you to defy the orders of Yamaraj? Whose messengers are you? Where have you come from, and why are you preventing us from taking him? Are you celestial beings, demigods, or great Siddhas? We are the servants of Yamaraj, why are you stopping us?” You may know that Ajamila did many sinful activities we must take him to the court of Yamaraj for punishment.

Vishnudutas replied, Ajamila chanted the holy name Narayan at the time of his death, so anyone who chants the holy name intentionally or unintentionally will get purified from all their sins. Then Yamadutas left the Ajamila and goes away from there.

Ajamila reflected within himself, realising that he had committed many sins under the influence of his senses. He thought, "Although I am a great sinner in this life, I must have certainly performed virtuous deeds in my past lives; otherwise, how could my tongue have uttered Bhagwan’s enchanting name at the moment of death? Now, I will control my mind, senses, and life force and strive never to lead myself into the dreadful darkness of hell again. Due to ignorance, I considered myself to be this body and pursued numerous desires, performing various actions to fulfil them. From now onwards I will be in rightful way and chant holy name.

Vishnudutas sends Ajamila to Vaikuntha because he chanted the holy name of Narayan at the time of his death.
