My First Interview Experience

Before my first technical interview in my fourth year, I had already been rejected in two GD rounds. So this was my first technical interview. I got shortlisted at 7 PM, and the very next day was my interview. I tried to revise core subjects, go through my resume, and even messaged people on LinkedIn to understand what kind of questions were being asked.

I was extremely nervous even before the interview. My hands were literally shaking. And when I saw three interviewers, my nervousness increased even more. The interview lasted one hour, and they asked back-to-back questions. I even forgot simple core subject questions — questions that I used to explain easily to my friends. Even basic questions related to my projects felt difficult at that moment.

At every question, I kept thinking, “Maybe this is the last one, I just want this to end.”

I got rejected, which was not surprising at all. Honestly, it was my worst performance.

After coming back home, I wrote down everything I needed to improve:

  • Practicing mock interviews, giving prompt interviews, and taking mock interviews with my friend (she makes them way tougher than the real interviews 😄).
  • Recording myself while solving DSA and listening to it
  • Revising core subjects and SQL more thoroughly
  • Removing some topics from my resume where I used to get stuck

In my next interview, the interviewer was very good. I fumbled at a few points, but he tried to help me by guiding me toward the answers. I cleared both technical rounds, but got rejected in the final round. Still, that day my confidence increased a lot. I was happy that I reached the last round after clearing two technical interviews. I even gave myself a pasta party 🍝.

For my next interview, I prepared even more and revised properly. I got rejected again in the last round . Now, I just want more interviews to analyze my performance. I definitely feel bad about the rejections, but I’m also happy that I got the chance.

So if you also feel scared, don’t overthink it. This happens to almost everyone. Some people succeed in their first interview, but that doesn’t mean you can’t.

Just improve step by step, write your weak points on paper, and work on them one by one. Your performance will definitely improve — and when you finally clear that interview, you’ll feel that it was all worth it. ✨
