Appearance Issues in Korean Society

Prejudice of appearance and disdain for those who laugh at it In Korean society, appearance goes beyond simple characteristics and becomes the criterion for judging values and possibilities. I have experienced such a gaze firsthand and have watched it countless times.

People who judge people by their appearance, distinguish between superiority and inferiority, and even laugh at them. It seems so natural and natural to them. But each time I feel a deep disdain with a strange rage. Consuming others so lightly and mistaking themselves as superior, In fact, because I know it’s a cheap defense mechanism to hide my inner anxiety and emptiness.

I don’t think it’s bad to decorate your appearance. I also wear good clothes, and I feel good looking in the mirror. The problem is, when it becomes a weapon to undermine and ignore someone. That arrogant gaze that believes that one can judge one’s existence and possibilities at a glance. And the numbness of not even feeling any guilt about it.

Now I laugh at people like that. No, to be precise, I laugh. The futile pride of ignoring and mocking someone based on their appearance and mistaking them for being a little more special. Eventually, they will realize that it’s themselves who lock themselves up.

Of course I know. People look at me and say I’m cool, I’m amazing. Perhaps that gaze is also based on appearance, attitude, and something that is apparent.

But now, even that gaze is calmly looking at it. I’ll realize it later, too. All that gaze and evaluation, ridicule and praise are all nothing after all.

The same women tease, laugh, and compare each other. Especially in the female culture, it comes and goes like a subtle joke or a casual way of speaking. They poke and laugh at each other, but there is a strange cruelty and anxiety hidden in the laughter.

I feel it every time I see such a landscape. That low-quality people always comfort themselves in a way that undermines others. And I know that. Maybe I was feeling the same superiority in a different way.

I need to objectify myself. I have to admit that there is a place where I fit in, and there is a place where I don’t fit in. Nevertheless, sometimes I feel sad, ashamed, and resentful about the fact. In particular, what eats away at me most quietly is my deep and deep qualification for college. No matter how much you turn away, it does not disappear and follows like a shadow.

Of course people say I’m cool, I’m amazing. I’ll realize it later, too. All that gaze and evaluation, ridicule and qualification are all nothing after all.
