Yesterday, we explored the basic sentence structure in German. Today, we’re continuing our journey by focusing on personal pronouns and verb conjugation using simple examples. Mastering this is essential for building everyday German sentences.

👤 Pronouns: Who’s Talking?

German personal pronouns help identify who is doing the action:

Pronoun Meaning Usage

ich I first person singular

du you (informal) second person singular (friends, family)

Sie you (formal) second person singular/formal situations

🔄 How Verb Conjugation Works

In German, verb endings change depending on the subject. Here’s the pattern:

Subject Verb Ending ich -e du -st Sie -en

🎯 Tip: First identify the subject, then apply the correct verb ending.

🏠 Verb: wohnen (to live)

Let’s conjugate this verb:

• ich wohne — I live
• du wohnst — you live (informal)
• Sie wohnen — you live (formal)

🗣️ Examples:

• Ich wohne in Berlin. (I live in Berlin.)
• Wo wohnst du? (Where do you live?)
• Wo wohnen Sie? (Where do you live? — formal)

🌍 Verb: kommen (to come)

• ich komme — I come
• du kommst — you come
• Sie kommen — you come (formal)

• Woher kommst du? (Where are you from?)

🧑‍💼 Verb: heißen (to be called)

• ich heiße — I am called
