Why I Created an AI Tool to Support Independent Living Services Agencies
My very first job after leaving the military in 2012 was working as a Direct Support Professional (DSP) — helping adults with disabilities strengthen their independent living skills.
Back then, our daily documentation was simple. We’d jot down notes in a binder after each session — just quick summaries of what we did.
I never really knew what happened with those notes after that. I just knew they mattered to someone down the line.
Fast forward a few years, and I found myself on the administrative side of Independent Living Services (ILS). That’s when I finally understood what those little daily notes were used for.
They were the foundation for progress reports, assessments, and ISPs (Individual Service Plans) that documented each client’s growth.
That perspective changed everything.
Writing those reports was meaningful work, but it was also time-consuming, mentally draining, and required hours of careful thought to make sure every word was person-centered, strengths-based, and SMART (specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound).
When AI became more accessible, something clicked.
I realized this technology could do more than just automate — it could lighten the load for ILS professionals who spend their days supporting others but end up buried in paperwork.
That’s what inspired me to create the ILS Report Assistant — an AI-powered app designed specifically for Independent Living Services agencies.
It takes raw daily notes and turns them into professional, strengths-based reports that meet Regional Center and compliance standards — without losing the human touch.
Tools like ChatGPT and Gemini are helpful, but they don’t always “speak the language” of ILS — the tone, the care, and the person-centered mindset that defines our work.
That’s what I built into the ILS Report Assistant from day one.
Because ILS workers deserve tools that honor both their time and their heart for service.
And as we move into the next phase of development, I’m more committed than ever to making this tool something that agencies can depend on — not just for speed, but for quality, accuracy, and integrity in documentation.
From handwritten notes in a notebook… to an AI-powered app designed to give ILS teams their time back.
It’s been quite the journey — and it’s only just beginning.
If you work in ILS or human services, I’d love to connect and show you how AI can support your agency’s documentation process — without losing the heart behind your work.
