From Lembang to Provence: A Wine & Cheese Journey in Bandung

Wine Event Recap

Throwing it back to one of my favorite moments from last year — our unforgettable Wine & Cheese Pairing Class in Bandung. This wasn’t just another event on the calendar; it was something truly special, born from collaboration, passion, and a shared love for great food and wine.

I had the privilege of organizing this experience alongside some incredible partners: Hilton Bandung, whose hospitality and venue set the perfect stage; The Peak Connoisseurs, who brought their expertise and curated wine selection; and of course, our talented local cheese producer from Lembang — DairyMan, whose creations would end up stealing the show.

You see, when most people think about cheese, their minds drift to the legendary names from Ireland or Switzerland, with their centuries-old traditions and prestige. And rightfully so. But what we discovered, right here in our own backyard, was nothing short of remarkable. DairyMan’s cheeses didn’t just hold their own — they brought something unique, something with a soul and a story rooted in our land.

That evening, we paired these exceptional local cheeses with a range of international wines, including the bright and lively Chandon and the effortlessly elegant Minuty. The pairings were more than just flavors on a plate; they were conversations between cultures, terroirs, and traditions.

Minuty’s arrival that year felt like a breath of fresh Provençal air sweeping into Indonesia’s wine scene. It was the first time this elegant rosé, with its pale pink hue and delicate notes of peach, citrus, and spring flowers, was officially introduced to our market — and we had the honor of showcasing it during our Wine & Cheese Pairing event. I still remember the excitement in the room as guests swirled their glasses, surprised by how effortlessly Minuty danced alongside the creamy, tangy profile of our Lembang-made cheeses. It wasn’t just a tasting; it felt like a gentle cultural handshake between the French Riviera and the hills of West Java.

And the energy? Unmistakable. The room buzzed with excitement — a full turnout, warm laughter, glasses clinking, and curious palates exploring every bite and sip. It didn’t feel like a class at all. It felt like an intimate gathering of friends, where stories flowed as easily as the wine, and discoveries were made in every pairing.

For me, as the organizer, this was the essence of why I love hosting these events. Yes, there’s the technical knowledge — tannins, acidity, body, and bouquet — but what truly matters is the connection it fosters. It’s about breaking down barriers, celebrating local talent, and finding common ground over something as beautifully simple yet endlessly profound as good food and wine. That night wasn’t just about tasting cheese and wine; it was about tasting community. And that, I think, is the most memorable pairing of all.
