The technique I used to create today’s Wavelength Rhythm painting was an additive one. Some of the paintings I’ve been sharing of late were created with a reductive technique. Meaning, I pulled a blade through the layer of texturing medium much as a snowplow does, removing a large amount as I go, which piles up problematically.

But the additive technique was the first one I used. Same start, with a thick layer of my custom medium, except I made the shapes by pushing the medium around. What differs in this artwork, is how my strokes created sharper edges, which was kind of fun; remind me of folded paper. A real learning experience.

I’ve written before about both Iridescent Pearl and Micaceous Iron Oxide, both problematic to photograph, that’s for sure. A closeup of the MIO would reveal mineral crystals that sparkle in the right light. The pearl pigment does not use actual pearls, but relies upon titanium oxide and possibly magic to achieve this creamy gleam.

I’m not terribly happy with this photo, however. I just didn’t have the time to dig out the painting and take a new photograph of it. But as I’ve mentioned often, photographing such interesting glittering pigments is truly a challenge, especially on top of my deep textures. Unlike the usual type of art one sees, this minimalist piece looks different throughout the day and from every angle.

Cool, clean, minimalist. Sometimes that’s what all we need.
