Structural Event Analysis|When Behavior Repeats, Yet No One Is “Choosing”
In human life, what truly confuses us is rarely a single bad decision. It is the persistence of patterns — repetitions that seem resistant to explanation. We may already know that a certain relationship is unsafe, yet find ourselves drawn into similar situations again and again. We may clearly recognize that a particular rhythm of life is depleting us, yet return to it repeatedly without any clear motivation.
These situations are often attributed to personality flaws, laziness, weak willpower, or unresolved psychological issues. But if we shift our perspective one level downward, a more fundamental — and more decisive — fact emerges: At the moment these behaviors occur, will has not yet truly intervened. When an event unfolds, do we generate autonomous awareness simultaneously — or do we first register sensation, and only later name it as anger, fear, shame, or intense excitement?
This suggests that we are not so much “making a choice” as being carried forward by structures formed earlier in our lives, and structures that guide the life system automatically toward familiar, stable, low-energy paths. This chapter examines precisely this structural phase: the one that begins shaping a life before will itself appears. [12]

Biological Attractors: How Systems Learn Where Stability Lies
Within the WCAT framework, an attractor is understood as a stable state that a system repeatedly accesses. It is not a desire, a motivation, or a goal. Rather, it is the way a system learns — through repeated operation — how to exist with the least expenditure of effort.
Early in life, individuals do not yet possess reflexive capacity, nor a clearly formed center of subjectivity. The system’s primary concern is not “Who should I become?” It is a more primitive question: How can stability be restored as quickly as possible in a changing environment?
Every episode of physiological arousal, emotional fluctuation, tension, or threat activates regulatory mechanisms. When a particular response pathway reliably reduces arousal and restores internal balance, that pathway is retained. Over time, these responses cease to be emergency measures. They sediment into preferences, tendencies, and avoidance patterns.
The system does not know what these patterns mean. It only knows that moving this way hurts less. In WCAT, such unnamed yet directional stability patterns are called Biological Attractors. [13][14]
Fear Before It Is Named
Before fear is named fear, it does not fail to exist. On the contrary, it often occupies the body in a highly consistent and repeatable manner: rapid breathing, accelerated heart rate, muscle tension, and attention locked into a strong directional pull. [15]
While the specific content of this experience varies across individuals and contexts, its locked-in structure is remarkably consistent. Structurally, this indicates that an attractor has already formed. Body, perception, and attention begin orbiting a single core state — one that has not yet been captured by language, concepts, or narrative systems. [16]
This is what WCAT designates as Will Circuit 0.5: The attractor is stable, but unnamed. The subject has not fully come online — yet is already entangled within the process. [17] Only with the later intervention of higher-order cognitive systems does this state become identified as “fear,” “anger,” or another emotional category, allowing will to begin operating in a narratable and selectable manner. [18]

Will Circuit 0.5: Direction Without an Author
Circuit 0.5 describes the stage in which biological attractors are already formed, but have not yet been named, interpreted, or reorganized by conscious subjectivity.
Compared to System 0, an important shift occurs here: consciousness no longer exists merely as a diffuse field, but begins to display predictable directional tendencies. Still, this directionality is not yet will. In Circuit 0.5, behaviors repeat with stability, emotional reactions show fixed trigger points, and individuals become unusually sensitive or dependent on specific stimuli.
Yet none of this can be clearly identified by the “I” as my choice. Direction exists. Authorship does not. The system is being pulled, but lacks the capacity to reflect on what is pulling it. At this stage, the concept of “wrong choice” is not yet applicable — because choice itself has not fully come into being.
From Being Pulled to Attempting to Name
Most individuals remain in Circuit 0.5 for extended periods of development. In infancy, biological attractors form through bodily comfort, physical proximity, and rhythmic consistency. Later, stress, reward structures, punishment, and emotional regulation styles continuously reinforce these pathways. By the time language and social norms intervene, these patterns are already deeply embedded within the life system, governing its pre-reflective operations.
This explains a frequently overlooked phenomenon: When language and cognition finally emerge, they do not operate on a blank slate. Instead, they often function as post hoc explanations for already-existing attractors. Seemingly reasonable narratives arise — not to guide behavior, but to justify trajectories that have long been underway. In this sense, Circuit 0.5 is not a residue of “lower consciousness.” It is the structural base upon which all subsequent will circuits unfold. [19]
Not Failure, but a Necessary Threshold
Understanding Circuit 0.5 does not require rejecting it. Without sufficiently stable biological attractors, will cannot emerge at all. A system incapable of maintaining basic equilibrium cannot afford the costs of reflexivity or choice.
Circuit 0.5 is therefore neither an obsolete mechanism nor a doomed state of fixation. It is the first network of pathways life lays down before will appears. However, if a system never moves beyond Circuit 0.5, it becomes permanently confined to narrating and legitimizing its attractors after the fact. Meaning, in such cases, is reduced to semantic authorization rather than authorship. [20] Long-term fixation at this stage limits the visibility of self-authored pathways — a limitation that only higher-order circuits can recognize as structural. [21][22]

In the next chapter, we will follow the development of human cognitive systems to examine the moment when biological attractors are first clearly named, marked, and integrated into semantic structures.

Within WCAT, E1 and E6 are the most direct empirical projections of Circuit 0.5.
E1|Biological Attractor Capture Occurs when, under stress, fatigue, or high arousal, individuals are repeatedly pulled into familiar bodily pathways while conscious intervention arrives too late — or not at all. Such behaviors are rapid, difficult to explain afterward, and feel “obvious” in the moment.
E6|Physiological–Cultural Decoupling Failure Describes situations where cognitive values have shifted, yet biological attractors continue to dominate behavior. This is not hypocrisy or self-betrayal, but a lack of integration between circuit levels.
From the perspective of Circuit 0.5, these states do not require moral judgment. They simply indicate that will has not yet fully assumed directional control.
Research References and Theoretical Lineage
[12] Automaticity and Non-Choice Discussions of emotional experience preceding linguistic naming may be compared with Antonio Damasio’s work on somatic markers, as well as Joseph LeDoux’s distinction between different emotional processing pathways. WCAT does not attempt to account for specific neural mechanisms here. Its focus lies instead on how system accessibility undergoes structural change before and after naming intervenes.
[13] The Origin of the Attractor Concept The term attractor originates in dynamical systems theory, where it describes stable states toward which a system tends to evolve. Relevant comparisons may be drawn with Ilya Prigogine’s work on complex systems, steady states, and dissipative structures.
Within WCAT, this concept is translated into the domain of consciousness systems, where it refers to repeatedly accessed, low-energy operational pathways — rather than to mathematical convergence points in phase space.
[14] Biological Attractors The concept of Biological Attractors, as used in this chapter, is an original construct within the WCAT framework. It is introduced to describe stable directional structures formed through physiological regulation, emotional feedback, and experiential sedimentation prior to the intervention of will.
At present, this construct does not correspond one-to-one with any established theory in psychology or neuroscience.
[15] Fear as a Structural State Discussions of fear occupying the body as a holistic state prior to linguistic naming may be compared with phenomenological accounts of emotion as a mode of world-orientation, such as those found in the work of Maurice Merleau-Ponty.
WCAT does not examine subjective experience as such. Instead, it focuses on how such states function as stable attractors that lock system resources.
[16] Emotion Prior to Naming Analyses of consciousness operating prior to the formation of a fully articulated subject may be compared with Thomas Metzinger’s account of minimal phenomenal selfhood and Shaun Gallagher’s notion of pre-reflective awareness.
WCAT does not adopt a phenomenological reduction. Rather, it defines this condition as a structural level in which functions are not yet differentiated but are already operational. The emphasis lies not on experiential content, but on whether the system possesses a reflexive interface.
[17] Will Circuit 0.5 Will Circuit 0.5 is not a stage within traditional developmental psychology. It is an intermediate structural level introduced by WCAT to describe situations in which directionality has already formed, while authorship has not yet emerged.
This construct accounts for the coexistence of behavioral stability and the absence of subject-level agency.

[19] Pre-Reflective States Are Not Inferior The view that pre-reflective states are not deficiencies, but fully functional modes of existence, may be compared with perspectives in ecological psychology and embodied cognition that emphasize situational adaptation.
WCAT explicitly rejects interpreting non-reflexive states as “primitive” or “underdeveloped.” Instead, they are treated as necessary substrates for the emergence of will.
[20] Post-Hoc Narratives and Rationalization Phenomena in which individuals generate explanatory narratives after behavior has occurred may be compared with social psychological research on rationalization and post-hoc attribution.
WCAT emphasizes that narrative does not drive behavior; it functions as a semantic patch applied to already-existing attractors.
[21] Stability and the Cost of Reflexivity The relationship between system stability and the cost of higher-order regulation may be compared with discussions in cybernetics and theories of biological homeostasis and allostasis.
WCAT proposes that reflexivity is not a free capacity. It can be activated only when the system possesses sufficient surplus stability.
[22] Non-Normative Statement The discussion of long-term residence in Will Circuit 0.5 does not constitute a value judgment or behavioral prescription. It serves solely to describe differences in pathway visibility that may emerge across distinct consciousness structures during extended operation.
[23] Methodological Statement Terms such as threshold, transition, and locking, as used in this chapter, are descriptive structural metaphors. They do not imply evolutionary necessity or normative valuation, nor do they presuppose a linear or progressive trajectory of consciousness development.
