psychology of first impressions
Have you ever ever walked into a room just to glance at people you have never really never seen? Have you ever noticed how the brain just sketches a rough personality essay on the person in front of you even though you have just met them a few seconds ago ? Well nowadays people(such as me) label this as vibe energy , you might’ve heard someone say , “I like Harvey ever since i met him, he just just radiates such a positive energy.”
Well you see this ‘vibe’ enigma is actually made in the first 100 milliseconds you see someone , faster than a conscious human blink.
As you see someone new ,your brain scans them for mainly two traits
- Trustworthiness : well this trait is examined by how warm a face looks like or how the tone of voice may seem . Your brain thinks fast , assuming weather this person is worthy of my trust or not .
- Dominance: This is pretty self explanatory as for this trait your brain scans the person’s physical appearance . If the brain thinks the person ahead of me is scary looking and may be threatening . Thus the brain makes wild statements that are instilled in the mind for quite the while .
your mind is basically finding out , “ If I can safely interact with this person.”
You might even wonder why does the brain go looking for these two traits so specifically , well the answer is quite simple , it is due to fact that the human body has two main modes “rest and digest” and “fight or flight” . So in simple words the brain rushes to enter one of the two modes.
As mentioned earlier these assumptions are made in the first few moments, opening a wide hole for mistakes , meaning the first impression might be wrong at often times. That is why you probably sometimes think , “Oh when I first met them , they seemed so weird , but i found out that they are actually quite chill.” Well now you know the answer for that.
So next time time you meet someone , ask yourself , are you seeing them or are they just your brain’s first draft?
