How an old Redmine Outage Sparked a Positive Change at Crevier Group

The countdown to Crevier’s big product launch was ticking, and the development team was buzzing with last-minute tweaks. But then, disaster struck. Redmine 4, their project management lifeline, went down.

For Etienne, the IT Supervisor, the crisis was a wake-up call. The over-dependence on a single system, without a proper backup plan, had created a critical vulnerability. This case study explores how Crevier Group transformed this Redmine outage into a positive change.

We’re currently running Redmine on our own server. We’re interested in migrating to your web-hosted RedmineUP solution to benefit from reduced maintenance and dedicated technical support. Additionally, we utilize Single Sign-On (SSO) with Azure Active Directory (Azure AD) for automated user authentication. Etienne Brault, IT Supervisor

On-premises Redmine 4.1.1, Crevier’s work management tool, came with limitations:

  • Security headaches. Keeping Redmine updated with security patches required constant vigilance and manual work for their IT team.
  • Upgrade Redmine and plugins. Moving to newer versions (like Redmine 5) was complex, especially with custom configurations, potentially causing compatibility issues.
  • In-House expertise drain. Maintaining Redmine demanded DevOps and Ruby skills, a burden for smaller companies lacking dedicated IT staff.
  • Daily backups. Ensuring data safety meant Crevier had to invest extra resources in planning, implementing, and testing disaster recovery.
  • Limited support. While a user community existed, official support was scarce, making troubleshooting complex issues a challenge.

As we explored our options, some key considerations emerged: access to migration assistance, pre-installed essential plugins to save time, data center location with ISO certifications for compliance and security, and the ability to customize the Redmine instance to perfectly fit our specific workflows
