What’s in My Heart?

We all have a lot on our plates, don’t we?

Struggles, emotions, decisions, judgments, patience—name it all. Under the sun, we all have been facing different circumstances that undeniably lead us astray. You see, it’s easy to claim by our words that we trust and know who’s in control. Although the Scriptures tell us that out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks, our words sometimes are far from what’s in our hearts.

What we have in our hearts are anxiety, anger, self-righteousness, and self-sufficiency, and yet we force our mouths to claim that we honor the God of all creation and that our Lord is Jesus Christ, the Son of God. Confronted with this guilt, I must say it is crucial not just to check on our hearts but also to be honest with them. Yes, it may require shame and humility, but these belong to the first layer upon which we step toward forgiveness.

At times, our hearts make us pretend everything is fine. For once, face it as it is and converse with it. One proverb in the Scriptures tells us to keep our hearts with vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life. It is never wrong to see and acknowledge that our hearts are monstrous, but it is never right to turn from them as they are and scream what they do not hold. To sit and converse with your heart is the beginning of humility before the LORD.

As I have reflected upon the matters of life since the beginning of the year, I have come to realize that when the storm rages, my heart does not look above; instead, it watches the boat—fixated on how it must bear the burden of the waves. In that, I was and am never right. I should have looked to the God of the storm, trusting that He would calm it in His time, and exercised the patience to wait for His hand to still the tempest.

Then we can ask, "What’s in my heart?" Only then can we learn to hopefully unfold a yearning for Christ Jesus, as He is the only hope for a wandering heart. It is never too late in this lifetime for our honest hearts to converse with a loving Christ.

He is the way for a lost heart. He is the truth for a perplexed heart. He is the life for a dying heart. Christ Jesus is the answer for it all.
