My First Day at the Office Became My Worst Memory

Office Story Series Part 1

After a break of three months, I decided to find another job. It was not a difficult process, unlike when I got my first job. Soon, I received an offer letter, and I was very happy.

Finally, the day arrived. I woke up early and got dressed. I reached the office too early because I thought the office would open on time. But it opened much later than I expected. I kept checking my phone while waiting outside. At that moment, I thought the office was not very punctual. I was surprised, but at the same time, I felt happy and excited about my new beginning.

Later, the HR arrived and opened the office. She showed me my seat, and I was happy to sit there. I talked with the person sitting next to me, and everything was going well in the morning.

In the afternoon, exactly at 1 o’clock, it was lunchtime. I had not brought any food because I thought everyone ate from the canteen. Since it was my first day, the HR asked everyone to have lunch with me so that I would feel comfortable and welcomed.

While entering the lift, one of my colleagues, who was also a senior on my team, did not seem happy to join me for lunch. She told the others that she preferred eating in the pantry on our floor instead of coming with us.

The HR called her and asked her to join us. But inside the lift, in front of many people from different companies, she responded rudely and said, “I don’t like it.” Her attitude, expressions, and behaviour made me feel deeply insulted and embarrassed. At that moment, I cried inside. My heart felt broken.

Later, while we were eating lunch, that same girl came and joined us. But by then, my first impression of the office and my colleagues had already become negative. I even thought about resigning on the very first day.

However, the HR convinced me to stay. She spoke to that girl about her behaviour, and later the senior girl came and apologised to me. But deep inside, I was still hurt. I felt like I would not be able to survive in that environment.

Unfortunately, her behaviour continued. She never treated me properly.

It became my first and worst experience in an office. I had worked in two places before, and I had never experienced any kind of misbehaviour from anyone. Even now, those memories still hurt.
