She Almost Lost Her Hope…

All my busy days were finally behind me.
I sighed in comfort before closing my eyes, eagerly waiting for tomorrow morning.
This mama wasn’t looking forward to having free time for herself. She was looking forward to uninterrupted time with her son.
The next morning…
“Baby, we’re going on our bikes today! We’ll buy a book, pick up a few things for the house, then come back home, cook together and read.”
“Yaaay! Let’s go!” my son exclaimed.
“But First breakfast… then I need to water the plants.”
“Augh… okay.”
I smiled knowing how much my kid actually wants to learn or to do any activities with me — and he doesn’t mind waiting for that.
As soon as I finished watering the plants, I heard a familiar voice calling from a distance.
“Sweetie… sweetieee… sweeetiiie!”
“Who’s calling?”
“Nannyyyy!” screamed the kids.
It was my mum.
The minute I see my beloved mum, my body switches into comfort mode — or should I say lazy mode.
We chatted, talked, laughed, ran a few errands, enjoyed a nice meal at a restaurant, and of course, took the kids out to play until night finally arrived.
It was a beautiful day, just like the ones before it.
But…
No teaching.
No meaningful one-on-one time with my son.
No Qur’an recitation.
No conversations to uplift his faith.
I couldn’t help but wonder,
When will I finally get that quiet moment with him?
“Mama!” Anas called, pulling me out of my thoughts as I helped him get ready for bed.
“Why did you give that little poor kid money? What if he was lying to you?”
That little poor kid…?
The money…
Oh…
Oh!
This is it.
My golden opportunity to teach him something valuable! How could I have forgotten about that little moment that happened during our outing with my Mum?
SubhanAllah…Never underestimate the small moments Allah places in your day, for that may be the plan.
“Okay, sweetie. To answer your lovely question, let’s read Surah Ad-Duha."
In the Name of Allah — the Most Compassionate, Most Merciful
- By the morning sunlight,
- and the night when it falls still!
- Your Lord ˹O Prophet˺ has not abandoned you, nor has He become hateful ˹of you˺.
- And the next life is certainly far better for you than this one.
- And ˹surely˺ your Lord will give so much to you that you will be pleased.
- Did He not find you as an orphan then sheltered you?
- Did He not find you unguided then guided you?
- And did He not find you needy then satisfied your needs?
- So do not oppress the orphan,
- nor repulse the beggar. (I emphasized this verse while looking him in the eyes with a smile.)
- And proclaim the blessings of your Lord.
"Okay, so we shouldn’t turn away someone who’s asking for help, but what if he is lying about being poor?" he said.
I answered wholeheartedly: “The first thing I did was what Allah instructed me to do. Allah knows best whether they were telling the truth or not. That’s not for me to judge. My duty is to help sincerely for His sake whenever I am able to. If they were honest, then Alhamdulillah. And if they were lying, it doesn’t take away my reward, because Allah knows the intention of my heart.”
“But Mum! What if that poor little child you helped with your money grows up to become a criminal? What if, without realizing it, you helped a future criminal?”
I smiled, delighted by the way my son was thinking, and said:
“And now, let’s move on to a hadith.”
“The Prophet ﷺ once told us about a man who sincerely wanted to give charity for Allah’s sake. He gave it to someone he thought was in need, but later people told him, ‘You gave it to a sinful woman!’ The next time, they said, ‘You gave it to a rich man!’ Then another time, ‘You gave it to a thief!’
But throughout all of this, the man continued to praise Allah and did not worry at all.
And indeed, Allah showed him the wisdom behind what happened. That charity became a reason for the woman to repent, for the rich person to be reminded to spend from what Allah had given him, and for the thief to leave stealing.
“And perhaps,” my child added, “that little kid may one day have his broken heart softened by a Muslim’s good deed, and it may become the reason he searches for a better path when he grows up.”
“Exactly!” I smiled, feeling butterflies in my stomach as I realized how beautifully this little chat with my child was ending. It was such a precious moment.
“Oh Allah,” I thought as I looked at my son drifting to sleep peacefully, “all I wanted was to teach my son. But you did not only give me the chance to teach him; You also taught me through him.”
And I whispered in my heart:
“Never give up hope. Be patient. Allah is always there, and He will surprise you in ways you never expected. Keep asking Him, and He will guide you and give you what is best at the right time.”
“Alhamdulillah.”
