A hanging swing looks simple.
Structurally, it is not.
When two adults sit and begin swinging, the load on the beam increases significantly due to motion. This build is engineered for real-world use — not light decorative framing.
This design uses an A-frame geometry with a laminated structural beam and galvanized hardware rated for dynamic loads.

Step-By-Step Build
1️⃣ Build the Laminated Beam
Pair two 2×6 boards together.
Apply exterior wood glue between them. Clamp tightly and secure every 12–16" using 3" structural screws in a staggered pattern.
Repeat for the second beam layer if desired.
This laminated approach increases bending resistance while using standard dimensional lumber.
2️⃣ Prepare the A-Frame Legs
Cut all 4×4 legs to 84".
Cut the top ends at ~15° to create the outward splay. This angle increases lateral stability under swinging motion.
Lay two legs flat to form an A shape. Ensure base spread equals 60" footprint.
3️⃣ Attach Beam to Leg Assemblies
Position the laminated beam across the top of both A-frames.
Drill ½" through holes and secure with:
- ½" galvanized carriage bolts
- Washers
- Lock nuts
Do not rely on screws alone for this connection.
Bolts handle shear load significantly better under motion.
4️⃣ Install Cross Bracing
Install a 2×4 brace between the legs approximately 24" from the ground.
Secure using 3" exterior screws.
This prevents inward collapse and improves lateral rigidity.
5️⃣ Install Swing Hardware
Mark hanger bolt positions 60" apart, centred on the beam.
Drill pilot holes and install ½" galvanized swing hanger bolts rated for 1,000 lbs or higher.
Attach a heavy-duty chain to the swing bench.
Adjust chain length to maintain:
- 18"–22" seat height from ground
- 2–3" side clearance from legs

Dynamic Load Factor
Swing motion increases the beam load due to acceleration.
Using a conservative 1.5× dynamic factor:

A laminated double 2×6 beam across a 60" span provides sufficient bending resistance for this load range when properly bolted.
The A-frame geometry transfers load downward and outward, reducing horizontal stress on the beam.

Freestanding (Grass Surface)
- Ensure level base
- Add rubber pads under the feet
Permanent Install
- Bury legs 12–18" in concrete
- Increase post length accordingly
